HHS track teams perform in Whitefish

Going into another high-profile track meet, the Havre High track and field teams knew it was going to have fight and battle for every point and place it would get on the road.

And that was the case Saturday at the ARM Invitational in Whitefish. The Central A Blue Ponies have been competing very well over the last several meets, but were limited in the team standings over the weekend. With points going to the top six athletes, the HHS girls and boys finished near the middle of the team standings. Not all final team scores were available. But teams like Class AA Kalispell Glacier dominated both fields with 143 points by the girls and 150 by the boys. Whitefish also showed some Class A dominance with a second-place finish by the girls, 93 points, as well as a second-place finish with the boys, 92 points.

“The AA schools like Glacier and Flathead are loaded with talent,” Havre High head coach John Ita said. “Whitefish is also loaded with talent, so is Columbia Falls, but it was just fun be there and watch some really excellent athletes. But when you look at what we wanted to do last week (turn in competitive times and marks and score team points), we did what we wanted to do. We scored some points, and a lot of years we haven’t scored any.”

Even though the Ponies continued to compete at a high level at the ARM in Whitefish, the amount of talent in attendance made it very difficult to break into the top six in any event. Only the best of the best of Saturday’s athletes earned a top spot, and it took impressive marks and times to do so.

The Blue Ponies had a handful of athletes that proved they could compete with some of the state’s best. In girls action, three competitors really stuck out. Lacey Waid continues to dominate the pole vault wherever she competes, and after clearing 10-6 yet again, not only did she capture the No. 1 finish, she also set a new meet record. Last season Waid tied the meet record with a 10-0 vault. Peyton Filius and Haley Ohm also continued to run well. Filius earned a No. 4 finish after running a 2:31.72 in the 800, while Ohm captured a No. 5 finish after running a 5:48.54 in the 1600.

For the HHS boys, a couple of individual athletes also looked strong. Ryne Antley had another solid day in the javelin, this time placing fourth with a throw of 153-3. Thomas Gruber held his own in the pole vault, clearing 11-6 and finishing the day in sixth place.

“One of the cool stories coming from Saturday was Lacey Waid setting a new meet record,” Ita said. “A lot of people came out just to watch her vault because they thought she had a chance to set a new record, and she didn’t disappoint. She really came through, and that was really cool to see.”

But several other Blue Pony athletes were on the verge of turning some heads as well.

Megan Erickson was in the top 10 in the 800, while Ohm also looked strong in the 3,200, finishing just outside the top six. Naomi Terry was competitive in the 200, landing in eighth place. Carly Rennick earned a new personal best in the discus, throwing nearly 10 feet farther than her previous best. The 4x100 relay finished in seventh for the Ponies, while both boys relay teams also looked solid again, both finishing inside the top 10. Nate Rismon looked strong in the 400, while Kyle Duitsman finished strong in the shot put and discus, narrowly missing out on point contention. The 4x100 finished in tenth and the 4x400 finished in eighth place.

“This meet helped us coaches work with the athletes more,” Ita said. “We saw some of the best in the state so now we know what we need kids to do to be able to score points and divisionals and state. But we had a good day, we had a lot of kids, including young kids who got personal records on a horrible day to compete. The day started at 4:30 in the morning, then we rode four hours on a bus to get out and compete in the pouring-down rain. But despite the conditions of the day, the kids did their best to keep warm and get out and compete pretty hard.”

Tuesday, a select group of Ponies will be back in action when they travel to Glasgow for the Top 10 meet.
