Knights bring home hardware, again

North Star girls get third, Carlon wins double gold, while Chinook's Nelson also wins gold at Class C state track meet

It wasn’t the trophy the North Star girls track team was gunning for. But all the same, the Knights proved once again why they are one of the elite prep track and field teams in the state.

North Star, which captured the 2012 state championship, grabbed third place at this weekend’s Class C state track meet, held Friday-Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls. The 47 points the Knights scored was behind state champion Seely-Swan’s 62 points and five behind second place West Yellowstone’s 52. Yet, it wrapped up another brilliant season for the Knights.

And North Star senior Bettie Carlon also went out with a bang. Carlon repeated as the Class C state triple jump champion, winning the event on Friday with a 35-07 leap. But the gold medals didn’t end there for the four-year track and field star. Carlon also captured the long jump state championship with a jump of 16-10, outdoing teammate Tylynn Rettig, who jumped 16-06 to finish in second place.

Chinook got a great individual performance from Britney Nelson, who scored all 18 team points for the Sugarbeeters. Nelson captured the state championship in the shot put with a toss of 37-07, while she finished second in the discus with a toss of 110-09.

Carlon and Rettig were the big point getters for the Knights, as expected.

Rettig, who’s had a stellar season, finished third in the 100 meters with a time of 12.98, while Carlon finished right behind her with a time of 13:02. Rettig also placed sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 27:03.

Carlon also scored points as part of the Knights’ outstanding 4x100 relay team, which finished second with a time of 52.54. The team was also composed of Graysen Spicher, Delainey Spicher, who ran anchor, as well as Mackenzie Hansen.

"You can't replace her, (Carlon)" North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. "You can't replace any of the six senior girls we're losing to graduation. You just hope somebody steps up. But I think my girls have turned the corner with meet preparation. It's our third straight team trophy."

Big Sandy got on the medal stand on the girls side as well. Senior Molly Herron capped off an outstanding sports career for the Pioneers with a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters. Herron finished the race in 2:26.82.

In the boys state meet, Hi-Line teams weren’t in the trophy hunt, and the tremendous prep career of Box Elder’s Will Ketchum didn’t quite end how he was hoping.

Ketchum entered the state meet in Great Falls as one of the premier distance runners in the state, and he finished an outstanding second in the grueling 3,200 meters. Ketchum finished the race in 10:25.50, but was just not able to catch up to Bainville’s Chance Hyatt, who dominated the distance races. Ketchum just missed the podium in the faster 1,600 meters, finishing in seventh place overall.

Chinook scored the most team points of any area boys team in the field. Senior Zach Molyneaux totaled 10 points for the Beeters. He finished third in the shot put with a final toss of 50-05 and fourth in the discus with a throw of 134-11.

Chester/J-I’s Cody Ramberg also got on the medal stand, in the high jump, finishing in a tie for sixth with a height of 5-10.

The Charlo Vikings captured the team title with 52 points. Jordan was second with 44 points and Manhatten Christian was third with 41.5.
