Jim was born on April 11, 1949, in Havre, to Gregory and Elaine (Hockett) Henderson. He was raised on the family ranch, attending school at Warrick, and moving on to Big Sandy and Chinook high schools.

In 1969, he married Josephine Komarek, and the couple's union was blessed with two children. They later divorced, and on July 3, 1991, Jim married Reatha Parsons, joining their families. The couple lived in Chinook for some time before relocating to the family ranch, where they spent the last 18 years.

Over the years, Jim farmed outside of Chinook, worked in construction building pole barns, and for the last 18 years, cared for the family ranch south of Big Sandy.

Jim was an outgoing man with a fantastic sense of humor. He absolutely loved people, and never met someone with whom he could not become friends. When he was younger, he enjoyed riding in the rodeo, playing pool, and hunting. He was a very musical man who could play most any instrument. Jim was very social, and loved antiquing, going to auctions, visiting pawnshops and over-all wheeling and dealing. His children say he was great at doing everything but teaching. Over the years, Jim was quite the student, attending auctioneer and appraisal schools. But most of all, he loved his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Gregory and Elaine Henderson; his granddaughter, Mariah Henderson; his sisters Rita Andrews and Mary Henderson; and his brother, Gregory R. Henderson.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Reatha Henderson of Big Sandy; his children, JoLynn (Gorm) Scarpholt of Fairview, Montana, and Jay (Sue) Henderson of Lloyd, Montana; his step-children, Tammy (Jim) Teel of Chinook, and Rick (Renee') Stamper of Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Brianna and Cody Scarpholt, Colten Henderson, Morgan and Kelsey Mathon and Alyssa Stamper; his great-granddaughter; his sister, Carol (Lester) Sluggett of Roy, Montana; 32 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and beloved relatives-in-law.
