George Ferguson Column: Plenty of summer fun left

From the Fringe...

The start of a brand new fall sports season is just around the corner. Yes, summer is finally cooking right now, and baseball is in high gear, but it won’t be long until footballs and volleyballs are flying all over Havre and the Hi-Line.

However, there’s still plenty of big events on the local sports calendar in the coming weeks.

Those big events start this week. There’s plenty of baseball at Legion Field as the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball club plays their final four home games of the season. Havre hosts the Vauxhall Spurs on Wednesday, then wraps up the home schedule with a pair of games against the Fort MacLeod Royals on Thursday night. The North Stars are pushing toward the postseason, with the Northern A District Tournament set for July 23-27 in Fort MacLeod, Alberta.

Legion Field will also be the site of the 2014 Babe Ruth 13-year-old state tournament. The tourney is slated for the end of the month and will feature the Havre 13-year-old all-star team, as well as top teams from around the state.

Next week, the fun and excitement of the Great Northern Fair cranks up, and so does the rodeo action. Rodeo fans can take in the Havre Junior Rodeo July 17, then the professionals will invade the Great Northern Fairgrounds Arena July 18-19 for the 2014 NRA and NIRA Great Northern Stampede. As always, the fair concludes with the Jaycees Demolition Derby, and auto fans will have even more to cheer about this year, with the addition of the new “Bump and Run” races as part of the demo derby.

And though it’s still summer, there are two local football players who will get in early on the action. Harlem’s Seth Adams and Chinook’s Zach Molyneaux are preparing to compete in the 2014 Montana East-West Shrine Game. The game is being played July 19 in Laurel.

Summer is also a time for recreational sports. Beaver Creek Park and Fresno Reservoir offer great fishing, while Prairie Farms, Beaver Creek and the Chinook Golf Club offer local golfers plenty of quality golf holes and fun in the sun.

Meanwhile, Havre has many softball leagues this summer, including co-ed slowpitch and men’s slowpitch. And men’s fastpitch softball comes back to Havre and the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field. The 2014 ASA Men’s State Tournament will be held Aug. 1-3 in Havre.
