Museum board looks for 'Gramma's Attic' displays

The head of the local museum board is looking for ideas on what to show — and items to show — in a rotating display at the H. Earl Clack Memorial Museum.

Board Chair Judi Dritshulas said she wants to put out a call for ideas on what to display in Gramma’s Attic, a small display in the front of the museum.

The board started the display last year, used to hold items for about one-month displays, with local residents loaning historical items to the museum for those displays.

Boy Scouts of America Hi-Line District Executive Thomas Huether, who has applied to fill an open spot on the board, offered to help with that.

Huether, who applied to fill the spot vacated by Raela Hulett’s resignation last month, said he could loan a quilt from the Civil War era to add to quilts now shown in the rotating display. His application to the board is awaiting approval by the Hill County Commission.

Huether approached the board in June to offer re-enactments by his group, which tells the story of a Civil War infantry group that ended up in Montana.

Dritshulas told Huether Monday that she wants to take him up on his offer to have the 1st United States Volunteer Infantry perform re-enactments with the museum.

Huether’s group tells the story of the “Galvanized Yankees,” imprisoned Confederate soldiers who agreed to switch allegiances and serve the North during the Civil War. The soldiers were at one point stationed in Montana including at Fort Benton.

The board also approved, with some amendments on spelling and usage, months-long work of a committee chaired by Hulett to update the board’s bylaws and procedures. The board sent the documents to be reviewed by the county attorney and for the county commission’s approval.

Dritshulas said she also had sent a note to Hulett thanking her for her work on the board, especially her intensive work on the bylaws and procedures.
