Ruby Big Knife

Ruby Big Knife, 69, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014, in Rocky Boy, due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Wake services will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, and will continue until her funeral service, which will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014, also at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Rocky Boy Cemetery.  Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Ruby was born on Jan. 7, 1945, in Rocky Boy to Big Knife and Flora (Stump) Big Knife. She was raised in Rocky Boy, attending Rocky Boy Elementary School and graduating from Box Elder High School. For several years after high school, she worked at Rocky Boy High School as the secretary. In 1973, she and Tyrone Gopher began their life together. They remained in Rocky Boy, raising their four children there.

Ruby was a kind, loving woman who like to bead, play Bingo, pick berries, smudge and attend and participate in powwows and cultural ceremonies. She was a homebody who loved spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.

Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tyrone Gopher; her parents, Big Knife and Flora Big Knife; her brother. John Big Knife; her sister. Dorothy Big Knife; and her nephews. Conrad Merasty, Walt Big Knife and Mahlon Gunn Jr.

She is survived by her sons, Duane (Eugenia) and Timothy Gopher, all of Rocky Boy; her daughters, Natalie Big Knife of Rocky Boy and Rachel (Dave) Stock of Glendive; her seven grandchildren; her numerous great-grandchildren; her brothers, Joe (Roberta) Big Knife of Rocky Boy and Sky Child (Yvonne) Big Knife of Fort Washakie, Wyoming; her sister, Mary (Joe) Merasty of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, Jeanne (Clement) Hobbs of Rocky Boy, Alice Big Knife of Lame Deer and Minnie and Evelyn Big Knife, both of Rocky Boy; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
