Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Spencer Ross, Havre North Stars

Ross is a true veteran of Havre's diamonds

The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball club is set to compete in the Northern A District tournament, starting Thursday in Fort Macleod, Alberta.

The North Stars will need to finish in the top two to keep alive their season and the legion career of veteran Spencer Ross.

Ross, who graduated from Havre High School in 2013 and was a three-sport athlete, playing both basketball and golf for the Blue Ponies, is the senior member of North Stars. Ross has played for five season for Havre’s legion club, and he’s been an intragal part of keeping legion baseball in Havre steady.

Ross plays outfield and has pitched for the North Stars but has never made it to the Class A state tournament and would love nothing more than to do so in his final season with the team.

The veteran has been one of the most consistent players for the North Stars, who went 9-15 during district play, finishing sixth in the final standings. He contributes as the plate as well as on the mound.

Here are five questions for Havre’s lefty, as the North Stars get ready for the district tournament.

HDN: How do you feel about the end of your career with the North Stars?

Ross: “It’s sad, but at the same time I got a lot out of it. I have had a great time playing for the North Stars and made a lot of good friends.”

HDN: What professional baseball player or players do you model yourself after?

Ross: “Troy Tulowitzki, Josh Hamilton and Mike Trout are all players I like. I like their smarts and I also really like Trout’s speed. That’s one thing that I really like doing is running the bases and being a threat.”

HDN: What will you miss most about baseball and playing for the North Stars?

Ross: “I am definitely going to miss the atmosphere, playing under the lights. But mostly I am going to miss being around the guys on and off the field.”

HDN: What is next after baseball?

Ross: “I am not sure at this point. I am majoring in criminal justice so maybe the Border Patrol, but I have not really made up my mind.”

HDN: How do you feel about the North Stars’ chances at districts?

Ross: “I am extremely confident. We just have to score runs. We have done a great job of getting players into scoring position; we just need to get them in.”
