Havre 12U stars play at regionals

After a long summer of playing baseball, the season ended this past weekend for the Havre U12 All-Star team that made it all the way to the Cal Ripken Pacific Northwest Regional baseball tournament.

If Havre had been able to advance, the team would have went to the Cal Ripken Little League World Series for their age group but, in the end, they came up short, losing all four of their games in the tournament that began last Thursday in Kalispell.

Havre opened up against Alberta in group play Thursday and got off to a roaring start as they opened the game with two runs apiece in the first and second innings to take an early 4-0 lead.

However, Alberta answered with a seven-run third and despite a late rally from Havre in the top of the sixth, Alberta was able to hold on for a 9-7 win. Jake Huston led the way for the Havre with three RBIs.

In the second game of group play, Havre squared off against Polson, the Western Montana State champion. Polson scored two runs in the first to take a 2-0 advantage but Havre answered in the bottom of the third when Leyton Shennum scored on an RBI single by Tyrel Kjersem.

From that point on Polson clamped down and Havre failed to score again in an 8-1 defeat.

In the final game of group play, Havre squared off against Caldwell, the state champion from Idaho. Caldwell jumped out with a 9-0 lead after the first two innings and would go on to an easy 12-2 victory. Tanner Parson led the way for Havre with one hit, one RBI and two walks. Quinn Reno, Caleb Allestad and Kjersem, each managed a hit in the loss.

Following group play, Port Angeles, the North Washington State champions was the next team on tap for Havre.

Facing elimination and despite its best efforts, the Havre team was simply no match for Port Angeles, which took a 7-3 lead after the third inning but then scored 12 runs over the final three innings to make the final score 19-3.

Reno once again had a strong showing for Havre going three-for-three at the plate and scoring once. Jacob Miller and Cameron Pleninger each had an RBI in the loss.

Despite the four losses, it was still quite the summer of fun for the Havre team. The squad played a full slate of games, hosted the Cal Ripken East Montana State Tournament and participated in a tough regional tournament in Kalispell.
