Local Golf Report: Pony JV's play well in Lewistown

From Tee to Green...

Apparently, when it rains, it pours. At least that's the way it seemed this past week in Havre.

The golf week started out fine, but it sure didn't end that way as torrential rains started Thursday morning, and just wouldn't let up. The beginning of the four-day downpour hampered play at the annual Havre Golf Tournament, a tourney featuring the Havre Blue Ponies, the Lewistown Eagles, the CMR Rustlers, the Great Falls High Bison and the Browning Indians. It was a good morning to start, but the rain showed up and never let up, forcing the tournament to be stopped after nine holes.

Havre High golf fans will get another chance to see the Blue Ponies play, as they host the annual Havre Invitational Sept. 13 at Beaver Creek Golf Course.

The golf week began with the start of the 2014 men's league playoffs at Prairie Farms, and the first two rounds were exciting. In Tuesday night's first round, Michelob Light defeated Stockman Bank 2016, Valley Furniture beat Patrick Construction 20-16, Havre Ford defeated Dan Wagner Plumbing 20-16, Northern Edge beat Hi-Line Audio/Video 19-17, Independence Bank knocked off Hole 19 19.5-16.5, Master Sports took down Lisa's 15 West 22-14, Bing-N-Bob's bested Bear Paw Credit Union 20-16 and Tilleman Motors defeated DA Davidson 18.5-17.5.

The action continued with the second round Wednesday night. In the quarterfinals, Valley Furniture defeated Michelob Light 21-15, Northern Edge bested Havre Ford in a one-hole playoff, Independence Bank beat Master Sports 21.5-14.5 and Tilleman Motors defeated DA Davidson 18.5-17.5.

Last week's matches set up tonight's semifinals. Valley Furniture takes on Northern Edge, while Independence Bank battles Tilleman Motors. The two winners will meet in the 18-hole championship match Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the rain, the women were also able to continue their ladies' league playoffs last Thursday night. In the second round, Makin Waves defeated Scharfe, Kato & Co. via a tiebreaker after their match ended at 18-18. DA Davidson beat Patrick Construction 23-13, while Schubert Agency beat Independence Bank 18.5-17.5. Ali Ward was low gross with a round of 40, while Tammy Boles and Lindsay Kellam tied for low net at 34.

The ladies will hold their semifinals Thursday night, with Makin Waves taking on Scharfe, Kato & Co. again, while DA Davidson plays Schubert Agency. The two winners will advance to the championship match next week.

In tournament news, some changes have been made to the upcoming schedule. The annual Blue Pony Scramble, which was to be held this Sunday at Prairie Farms, has been canceled. The Havre Wrestling Club Scramble, which was slated for last weekend, has been moved to Sept. 13, while Prairie Farms will host a men's club championship Sept. 7. Jeremy Jensen is the defending club champion.

Prairie Farms will play host to the 7th annual Havre Wrestling Club tournament Sept. 13. The event is a four-person scramble with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $75 per player and includes green fees, mulligans and lunch. There are flag prizes as well. To sign up, call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.

Monday, the Havre High junior varsity golf team was in action at Pine Meadows in Lewistown. Below are the results from Havre's day.

Just a reminder to all golfers and leagues, there will be just two golf columns left, I am asking all golf leagues to please send me their final results, with photos of the champion and runner-up, so that I can make sure and get those in before the last From Tee to Green runs.
