Havre tree task force to help kids plant for Arbor Day

The Havre Task Force for Urban Reforestation Committee will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree seedling planting session Monday at Pepin Park.

More than 200 second-grade students from Lincoln-McKinley Primary School, Rocky Boy Elementary School and St. Jude Thaddeus School will be given tree seedlings in an effort to educate the youth about the value, care and maintenance of trees.

Sara Sieglock, secretary of Havre’s Parks and Recreation Department and member of TURF, said about 250 tree seedlings will be given to the second-graders.

“This year we have scarlet maple, lilac, American plum and Norway spruce,” she said.

Sieglock said the second-graders will be given a milk jug, or they will bring their own milk jug.

“We supply the dirt and we help them plant the tree in the jug,” she said. “Then we show them how to water it and we give them some information on planting and they take them home and plant them.”

Sieglock added that learning stations will be set up at the park.

“It’s important to know about our environment and it’s important to value our environment,” she said. “Trees are one of the most important things we’ve got in our environment.”

Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club members will help the TURF Committee plant the trees in the jugs and Mayor Tim Solomon, along with other City Council members will be in attendance.

The planting will begin at 9 a.m. For more information, call 265-5781.
