Catholic Daughters of the Americas set state convention in Havre

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas state convention is set to take place Friday and Saturday in Havre.

According to the organization’s website, the CDA was founded in 1903. The motto of the organization is “Unity and Charity” and members strive “to be helping hands where there is pain, poverty, sorrow or sickness.”

The theme of this year’s convention is 1 Corinthians 10:24 — “No man should seek his own interest, but rather that of his neighbor.”

Sue Swan, vice regent of St. Theresa’s Court 1161 and chairperson of the convention, said there are nine courts in Montana.

“We’ll have people coming from Baker, Hardin, Glendive and Sidney — those type of areas,” she said.

Swan said care kits will be put together at the convention.

“We’ve been collecting shampoos and soaps from motels, and then we’ve got donations of toothbrushes and toothpastes and combs,” she said. “We’re actually going to sew pockets in washcloths and then stuff them with these items.”

The completed care kits will be taken back to the communities where the people who will be attending the convention are from.

“Those people will be able to take those personal care kits to their home communities and distribute them either to homeless folks or people who are recovering from a family fire — whatever way they can distribute them,” Swan said.

Swan added that there will be speakers at the convention.

Jim Kizer of the Great Falls Rescue Mission will be the keynote speaker.

Mary Stevens, a harp therapist of Havre is scheduled to speak at the convention Friday.

“She does vibroacoustic harp — she does music therapy,” Swan said.

Sister Margaret Mary O’Doherty of Rocky Boy is scheduled to speak Saturday.

“She’s a Dominican nun, and she’s going to speak on Native American spirituality,” Swan said.

The convention will take place at St. Jude Parish Center, 440 7th Ave.
