Dollar Zone gets new spot, new name

The Dollar Zone, a discount retailer in Havre, will be moving to a new building and getting a new name.

Currently housed in the old Creative Leisure building on 1st Street, employees have been moving inventory and display structures to their new location in the annex Atrium Mall that once housed Aaron's furniture store. The store will be reborn as Havre Home & Party once it is fully set up.

Jill Miller, who has been manager at the store for two and a half years, says the project has been something the current owners had been considering for several months.

Having "dollar" in the name of the store mistakenly implied that all the merchandise the store carries costs a dollar, which Miller said is not the case.

"That's all we hear here is, 'Oh isn't this a dollar'? Well no, we're locally owned and we can't even buy it to sell for a dollar," said Miller.

That confusion has been compounded by the fact that Dollar Tree, a nationwide chain of bargain stores where all items are sold for a dollar, now has a location just up the street in the Holiday Village Mall.

So the owners are moving away from the bargain store model. While they will continue to carry a line of general merchandise, Miller said, they will be cutting back and shifting to carrying more of the licensed party supplies, balloons, greeting cards and home decor that are their best sellers.

"We're excited," said Miller about the change "It's gonna be nice."

Miller estimates she and her five employees should be moved, set up and open for business at their new location sometime around Labor Day weekend. Meanwhile the current store will be open, with half off specially marked items.

Havre Home & Party also hopes to hold a grand opening at its new store later this month on Festival Days weekend.
