Police Officer Day celebrates cops

Laura Mayer works at Bear Paw Credit Union and has taken it upon herself to create the push for the community to show their support for the Havre police.

She said that for “Thank a Police Officer Day,” which is this Saturday, she has sent out letters and emails to the community and business owners.

“The community has really responded with donations of pizza, lens cleaner, sunblock — lots of really great things,” Mayer said.

She said she hoped to be able to give to the Highway Patrol this year, but as of right now, it’s directed at the city police. This is the second year she has organized the effort.

“I just have a bunch of goodie-bags for them all weekend while they watch over Festival Days,” she said.

She will drop off the gifts Saturday morning, while the officers are out at the parade.

“The guys really appreciated it last year,” Mayer said. “In the goodie-bags, they got hand-warmers, hand sanitizer, many things they could use out on the job.”

The local schools are participating as well. Lincoln-McKinley Intermediate School made a large poster with drawings of officers, which they all signed. St. Jude Thaddeus School also made posters and “thank you” letters for the officers.

Anyone who wants to give to the officers can drop off their gifts Saturday morning as well.

Mayer said anyone can just thank them, write a note to them or donate something to them to show appreciation.
