Wanda Larson garden chosen as Yard of the Week

Wanda Larson's home at Heritage Drive and 18th Street was chosen as the Yard of the Week by Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club Sept. 3.

Wanda's yard is an array of flowers and shrubs. She began building the terraced front yard about five years ago. It is a continuing process, full of fun and change. In fact "fun" was a word Wanda used often when talking about her home and projects that many would describe as hard work.

A red brick path meanders from the front door to a patio area with a small red table and two chairs that beckon one to sit and enjoy. A honeysuckle vine-covered trellis and two trees set the scene. Wanda's gardens are full of annuals and perennials. She loves to try new plants, but beautiful geraniums are prevalent throughout her yard. After cutting them back in the fall, she lets them grow indoors until mid-winter, then takes cutting to start new plants. The original plant is trimmed back and fills in again for planting outdoors in the spring.

Wanda is very creative when coping with problems. In the side yard she trimmed back an overgrown tree that was close to the foundation, and driveway. Concerned for possible damage to the driveway and foundation if the roots were pulled out, Wanda put on her creative hat.

She built a flower bed in and around the trunk and drilled holes through the branches for solar lighting, voila, a fun and lighted flower garden.
