Fort Benton, Box Elder roll to 9C victories

The second weekend of girls high school basketball also marked the start of conference play. And that meant, there were some exciting early-season games in the area.

The District 9C action started Friday night when the North Star Knights beat the Turner Tornadoes in Gildford. The North Star defense held Turner to just eight points in the first half in the 52-37 win.

Peytan King caught fire for the Knights, scoring a game-high 20 points, while Sheridan O’Neill added eight. Ella Billmayer paced Turner with 13 points in the loss.

Also in the 9C Friday night, the defending champion Fort Benton Longhorns stayed unbeaten with a 62-22 thrashing of Big Sandy in Fort Benton. The Longhorns outscored the Pioneers 38-11 in the first half and never looked back.

Kaitlyn Bird scored a game-high 18 points for Fort Benton, which also got 12 from Bailey Wilson. Jaelynn Cline poured in 12 points in the loss for the Pioneers.

Box Elder and Chinook also got the weekend started off on the right foot Friday night.

In Chester, the visistng Bears ran away from the Chester/J-I Hawks, while Chinook bounced Hays-Lodge Pole, 54-25 in Hays. Brooke Elliot and Brooke Nicholson scored 11 points each for the Sugarbeeters, while the Thunderbirds got 11 points from Mulleah Stiffarm.

Chinook continued its winning ways Saturday, while the struggles of the young Big Sandy squad continued. In Chinook Saturday night, the Beeters beat the Pioneers 57-0.

Also Saturday night, Chester/J-I bounced back with a 45-39 home win over HLP. A 13-7 C/J-I run to start the second half helped the Hawks pull away for good. Korrine Harmon scored 12 points in the win for the Hawks, while Mulleah Stiffarm scored 26 points for the T-Birds.

In Box Elder Saturday night, the Box Elder Bears stayed perfect on the season, as they defeated North Star 50-36 in a pivitol early 9C showdown. Box Elder used a 13-3 run to start the second haldf to put the Knights away.

Jude The Boy and Tyrah Gopher each scored 10 for the balanced Bears, while Sheridan O’Neill scored 17 for the Knights.

In Class B action over the weekend, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars suffered a District 1B loss at the hands of Conrad, while Harlem was thumped by Malta 67-14 Friday night. Autumn Little Plume scored seven points in the loss for the Wildcats.

There was also plenty of hoops action Monday night on the Hi-Line.

North Star took it to Hays-Lodge Pole, as the Knights rolled to a 65-39 win. Sheridan O'Neill scored a game-high 25 points for the Knights, Mulleah Stiffarm scored 13 for HLP.

Monday night also saw Big Sandy fall to DGS, 78-25 with Jaelynn Cline scoring 11 points.

Fort Benton continued its winning ways by beating Class B Conrad 41-29 Monday night behind 15 points from Bailey Wilson.

And in another 9C showdown, Chester/J-I earned a narrow win at Turner, as the Hawks won 38-36.

Korrin Harmon scored 13 points for the Hawks, while Ella Billmayer scored 11 for the Tornadoes.
