The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team has been busy lately, and with a number of games on tap for this week, the schedule isn’t letting up.

After dropping two games in Fort MacLeod on Tuesday, the North Stars continued their road trip through Canada Wednesday as they took on the Lethbridge Miners. Havre got a split with Lethbridge last Saturday at home and appeared on its way to be doing so again on the road last night. Yet, after the North Stars lost the first game against Lethbridge 3-2, they dropped the second game, despite holding a 6-1 lead in the sixth inning, by the score of 9-7.

In the first game, Kennedy McKay was on the bump for Havre and the first-year North Star did his best to get his team a win, allowing just three runs on four hits through six innings. McKay struck out two and walked five in the loss.

Jerod Boles led the way for the North Stars’ offense, which scored runs in the top of the first and the top of the sixth. Boles notched two hits, while Brenden Danielson, Jake Sedahl and Trey Murphy each had one. Tony Antley had the only RBI in the game for Havre.

In game two against Lethbridge, the North Stars came out firing, scoring five runs in the top of the first to jump out to a 5-0 advantage. In the second, Havre added another run to go ahead 6-0. Boles, who got the start, allowed a run to the Miners in the bottom of the second inning, but after that held them scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when it all came crashing down for Havre.

The Miners, who started the inning down five, plated eight runs, which turned the game from a likely North Star win, to a probable defeat. Havre attempted a rally in the top of the seventh as Sedahl doubled to right to make the score 9-7. Yet, Jeff Miller, who was 2-for-5 on the night with two RBI’s, flied out to center to end any hopes of a comeback.

Boles was given the loss after surrendering eight runs total, even though just two of them were earned. He struck out three and walked four. Miller was the only player with multiple hits for Havre. Sedahl, Brendan Garden and Ethan Roberts all finished with one hit and one RBI.

With a 5-15 record in the Northern A District following the split with Lethbridge, the North Stars find themselves near the cellar as only last-place Great Falls is beneath them in the standings. And with four games looming against Lewistown, which currently sits in third with a 12-6 record, things won’t be getting easier.

Lewistown, which is in its first year in the district this season, will travel to Havre for a double-dip Friday, with the first pitch in the first game going out at 5 p.m., at Legion Field. Then, Havre will turn around and head to Lewistown Sunday to close a four-game stretch that could be critical for Havre if it hopes to improve its seeding for the district tournament. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.

“Right now we are just looking at the tournament,” North Stars head coach Dick Fuzesy said. “There is only going to be one berth this year, so we would need to win the tournament either way, so we are trying to play our best when that comes and try to move up as high into that middle area as we can.”

However, before the North Stars play their four games against Lewistown, they will first get a chance to take a breather from non-conference play as Mission Valley, a team from the Western A that sports a record of 16-18, will come to town. The North Stars and Mariners will play a doubleheader today, with the first game starting at 2.
