Northern's Farmer honored for volunteer work

Montana State University-Northern athlete Makhayla Farmer is being honored this weekend during a game in a different sport for her work off of the basketball court.

Farmer is one of 12 athletes Gov. Steve Bullock and Montana Campus Compact board members will honor for volunteer work during Saturday's Brawl of the Wild football game in Missoula between University of Montana and Montana State University.

"Makhayla Farmer is extremely active in community service in both Havre and Chinook," Northern Women's Basketball Coach Chris Mouat said. "She is the first one to step forward when a volunteer is needed. She is from a small town (Chinook) and she understands the value of giving her time to help others."

The work for which Farmer, a junior in elementary education, is being honored includes volunteering at Havre Food Bank, Bear Paw Credit Union Kids Day in the Park, Havre Pride trash collection, Beaver Creek Park Dash, MSU-Northern Alumni Foundation Chinese Auction and orienteering with kids in the Bear Paw Mountains.

Montana Campus Compact is a 17-campus higher education network that advances the public purposes of colleges and universities by deepening their ability to improve community life and educate students for civic and social responsibility

"College students in Montana do amazing community work, and their investment of time, talent and energy help improve our communities across the state. Campus Compact's Montana Athletes In Service Award honors the contributions of student athletes and volunteers," Josh Vanek of MTCC said.

The other athletes being honored in Missoula are:

Sonica Archdale, Fort Peck Community College, sophomore in general studies. Sport: Basketball. Service: Montana Army National Guard, FPCC Student Senate president, Wadopana Powwow committee, elder volunteer;

Burke Burgess, Rocky Mountain College, senior in elementary education. Sport: Football. Service: Little Guy Football Camps, Head Start, Day of Champions for Kids, Boys & Girls Club, summer camp counselor.

Will Davey, Montana Tech, junior in business information technology. Sport: Football. Service: Big Brothers and Sisters, Special Olympics, Knights of Columbus Free Meals Program.

Termaine Edmo, Blackfeet Community College, sophomore in addiction studies. Sport: Basketball. Service: Student Senate, Thanksgiving food drive, Christmas toy drive, cultural ceremonies, domestic violence prevention, suicide prevention specialist.

Chase Farrell, Carroll College, senior in business administration. Sport: Golf. Service: Student Body President, student government, campus clubs - ENACTUS and Christian College Fellowship.

Lauren Hausauer, Montana State University, senior in elementary education. Sport: Golf. Service: Spring Creek Memory Care, Special Olympics, regular volunteer in departmental events and in elementary school classrooms.

Sara Hilbert, Dawson Community College, sophomore in general studies. Sport: Basketball. Service: Bridge Day kid's games, Hike for Hope, Turkey Trot 5k Run, Sunday school teacher, breast cancer awareness raffle, provides day care for MOPS (Mothers

of Pre-schoolers) meetings.

Allie Keleti, University of Montana, senior in communications studies. Sport: Track and Field. Service: UM Spirit Squad, has helped build and maintain social media presence, taking photos and videos and posting daily on social media for the Spirit Squad.

Kiera Lake, Flathead Valley Community College, sophomore in agriculture. Sport: Logger Sports. Service: Adopt-a-Highway, Annual Family Forestry Expo, United Way, Flathead Youth Home, Youth Homes of Missoula, All Saints' Episcopal Church, Sparrows Nest, and Soroptimists of Whitefish.

Dana Lubieniecki, Montana State University Billings, senior in health-human performance. Sport: Soccer. Service: Vice president Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, captain of women's soccer team, regularly volunteers in the classroom and for local soccer club teams.

Tess Turk, University of Montan Western, senior in natural horsemanship-business administration. Sport: Rodeo. Service: Big Sky regional student director of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, UMW Rodeo Club president, UMW Rodeo team captain, Student Senate, Heritage Days, Dillon Jaycees Labor Day Parade, UMW Club Fair, and is a mentor and coach.
