Ice Hawks battle in home opener with Missoula

The Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team was excited to make its home debut this past weekend, but the visiting Missoula Bruins were a little unfriendly.

The Ice Hawks fell to the top team in the state twice over the weekend at the Havre Ice Dome, losing 9-0 Saturday night, and 8-3 in the rematch Sunday.

Still, the Ice Hawks (0-6) had some strong play and some good moments during their first home stand of the season.

Sunday, Havre goalie Kinzee Peterson saved a remarkable 51 Missoula shots, as she was stellar between the pipes. Offensively, Havre got a goal from Nic Stump, on assists by Ethan Roberts and Kyle Kirkpatrick, a goal from Clifford Lenhardt, with the same duo assisting, and a goal by Roberts, on an assist from Lenhardt.

Saturday night, in their home debut, the Bruins were standouts defensively, as they limited Havre to just 12 shots on goal. Peterson took 22 shots in the net in the first period. The Ice Hawk’s defense then held Missoula to just seven shots on goal in the third period.

Havre will now be off for Christmas break. The Ice Hawks will be back in the Ice Dome Jan. 7-8 to face the Flathead Fusion in two games.
