Pony matmen, boys hoops in action tonight

Christmas break is on its way, but Havre High sports teams have plenty to do before the weekend.

The HHS wrestling team makes its triumphant return to the HHS gymnasium tonight, fresh off last weekend’s championship at the Tri-State Tournament. Tonight, the Blue Ponies welcome in the Class AA CMR Rustlers for a dual, with former Havre High great Aaron Jensen now the longtime head coach of the Rustlers.

Havre and CMR meet once a year on the mat, and tonight’s dual will be a good one. While the powerful Ponies boast a trio of returning state champions, including unbeaten Parker Filius, as well as Jase Stokes and Martin Wilkie, who each have just one loss this year, the Rustlers have a strong lineup, too. That lineup includes Kai Stewart at 138 pounds, as well as Andrew Paradise at 113 and Keaton Jarrett at 103.

Tonight’s dual, which starts at 5, is the first of two for the Blue Ponies this week. Havre will also face off against Eastern A foe Lewistown Thursday afternoon, also in the HHS gymnasium.

Meanwhile, down the road in Malta, the Blue Pony boys basketball team will be in search of its first win of the young season. After dropping tough games at Belgrade and Livingston this weekend, the Blue Ponies will play the Class B Mustangs tonight.

Malta is currently 2-1 on the season with Hunter Love and Blake Sjostrom as players to watch. Havre will counter with its senior-laden lineup, led by Jacob LaBrie, Nate Korb, Isaac Warp and Ryan Bakke, as well as junior standout Ivar Aageson.

Tonight’s game, which tips at 7 in Malta, is the first of two for the Blue Ponies this week. Havre also hosts the Class AA Great Falls High Bison Thursday night at the HHS gymnasium. The HHS girls basketball team will wrap up a five-game road trip to start the season, Thursday night at GFH.
