Tempel picked to replace Hansen in Senate

Members of the county commissions from Cascade, Chouteau, Hill and Liberty counties picked a county commissioner to take the place of a senator who is on her way to work at the state Auditor's Office.

The commissioners picked Liberty County Commissioner Russ Tempel to take the place of Sen. Kris Hansen, R-Havre, in Senate District 14.

Tempel recused himself from the voting.

The votes were weighted by how many votes Hansen had received from each of the four counties, within which SD 14 lies, in the 2014 election.

Tempel received 63.167 votes in the weighted system, while Havre businessman Brad Lotton received 32.499 votes.

Hill County farmer and aviator Darrold Hutchinson did not received any votes.

Hansen announced earlier this month she was resigning her seat to take the position of chief legal counsel for incoming state Auditor Matt Rosendale.
