Lights jump into NAIA rankings

Now, in the eyes of all of the NAIA, Montana State University-Northern basketball is elite.

While the MSU-Northern women have been a highly ranked NAIA team all season long, the Northern men have joined the party.

In the new NAIA Men’s Coaches Poll released Tuesday, the Lights jumped into the Top 25 all the way at No. 15. Northern is off to one of its best starts in a decade, going 13-1 and 2-0 through the first half of the season, and the Lights are one of three Frontier teams in the Top 25. UM-Western moved up six spots to No. 11, while Carroll College, after losses in three of its last five games, slipped from No. 6, all the way down to No. 23.

The Lights, led by veteran head coach Shawn Huse, have achieved their highest ranking since early in the 2014-15 season and are making their first appearance in the Top 25 since November of the 2015-16 season.

Meanwhile, the Skylights, who are 11-2 and 1-1 in the Frontier, stayed at No. 11 in the new NAIA Women’s Coaches Poll. Northern is one of four Frontier teams in the women’s Top 25, and five teams in the poll. Lewis-Clark State is ranked No. 2 again this week, while UGF moved up one spot to No. 13. Carroll College remained at No. 25, while undefeated UM-Western is the top team receiving votes in the poll.

The Lights and Skylights restart Frontier play Thursday night at UGF. Northern is also on the road Saturday, at Carroll.
