Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Stars roll; T-Birds beat Bears in round one

As the season gets later, the games get more important and this past weekend, Box Elder and Hays-Lodge Pole played probably the most important regular season game so far in the District 9C.

The Bears, who have won the district the past four years, and who have dominated the series with HLP in recent years, hosted the Thunderbirds in Box Elder Saturday night. And in a game that lived up to the hype, it was the T-Birds that walked away victorious, 70-64.

The game between the 9C powers was close throughout, as the score was tied at the end of the first quarter, 17-17 and HLP led 35-34 at halftime. The T-Birds held a two-point lead entering the fourth quarter, before outscoring Box Elder 21-17 in the final stanza to seal the win.

Tyson Shambo had a stellar outing for HLP, scoring a game-high 33 points in the win. Frank Runs Above also contributed with 15 points for the T-Birds, while Box Elder got 23 from Trey Henderson and 13 from Pernell Morsette.

The Bears, who suffered their first district loss of the season to HLP Saturday, got their weekend underway Thursday on the road in Turner, knocking off the Tornadoes 78-43. Henderson scored 18 points to lead Box Elder. Morsette added 16. Eddie Harmon scored 14 in defeat for Turner, while Cody Welsh had 11.

In other 9C action Thursday, Fort Benton played host to Chester-Joplin-Inverness. The Longhorns, thanks to four double-digit scorers, knocked off the Hawks 63-49. Damon Bird and Ty Hasbrouck each had 13 for Fort Benton. Cory Richter finished with 21 for CJI.

While HLP got a key district win Saturday, the T-Birds played outside the district Friday night, beating Roy-Winifred by the score of 94-51. CJI also took part in non-conference action Friday, hosting Cut Bank of Class B and dropping the game by a score of 82-39. Richter was the top scorer again for CJI with 20 points.

Back within the 9C Friday, there was another key game between the North Star Knights and the Chinook Sugarbeeters. The two teams were battling it out for third place in the 9C standings and the Knights, who were on their home floor, snuck out a 43-40 triumph. Keevan Borlaug had 24 to lead North Star to victory. Kord Schneider finished with 20 in the loss for Chinook.

Turner also was at home for the second straight night Friday and after falling to Box Elder Thursday, the Tornadoes turned around and knocked off Big Sandy 81-74. Harmon poured in 34 for Turner while Welsh ended up with 23. Bryant Jones led the Pioneers with 32 in the loss.

Big Sandy was looking to rebound from its loss Friday, as the Pioneers hosted North Star Saturday night. Yet, the Knights, who now occupy third in the 9C standings, wouldn’t have it and won the game 53-40. Borlaug had another huge game, scoring 33 for North Star, while Laurence Alderdice had 10 for Big Sandy. Chinook, which lost to North Star the night before, also bounced back with a 47-37 win over Fort Benton.

In Class B play, the Harlem Wildcats dropped a home game to Shelby Friday night, falling to the Coyotes 87-42. Corbin Brockie led Harlem with nine points in the loss. The Wildcats also played Saturday at home against Poplar. But for the second consecutive game, Harlem was beat on its home floor, losing 70-49. Brockie was the top scorer against the Wildcats with 17 points.

Rocky Boy also played two games this past weekend, knocking off Fairfield 64-47 Friday, before drubbing Havre 70-42 Saturday night.
