Class B squads shine at annual Cal Wearley

Harlem, Havre and Turner boys post strong finishes at the Hi-Line's season-opening track meet

The Cal Wearley Invitational track meet is always the unofficial starting point in the local track season and with 30 teams and more than 500 athletes participating in the competition at the Havre Middle School track Wednesday, the meet was a success.

While Fort Benton took home a team title in the girls competition, the boys side of things was dominated by a pair of Class B schools as Fairfield won the boys crown with 133 points, followed by Glasgow, which was second with 104. Shelby was fourth with 47 and Harlem finished third with 37. Havre finished seventh with 22.

“Overall, it was a beautiful day,” North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. “I think that this was one of the nicest days that we have ever had for this track meet. So with the competition and how easy it was to run today, I think kids put up some really good times and distances.”

Teams from the surrounding area may have been left in the dust by the Eagles and the Scotties, but the Harlem Wildcats had a stellar day at the meet, thanks in large part to Reece Hutton, who took home individual titles in the shot put and discus with throws of 51-03 and 150-07.

However, Hutton wasn’t the only Wildcat to win an event, as Tyus Hammett took first in the high jump (6-02), while also finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Harlem also got points from Taggert Devaney, who was fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 300 hurdles.

Havre didn’t have quite as many athletes find the podium as Harlem, but the Blue Ponies did get a first-place showing in the 400 from Jacob LaBrie, who ran a 53.4 to win the race. Austin Jones also scored points for HHS with a fourth-place finish in the 800 and a sixth-place finish in the 1,600.

The Ponies, who finished seventh in the team competition, were right in front of the Turner Tornadoes, who finished eighth at the meet, thanks to an impressive day from Eddie Harmon, who placed in three different events, coming in second in the 400 and the 800, while also finishing third in the 100.

Rocky Boy’s Chase Corcoran was another local athlete who shined Wednesday, as he finished sixth in the 100 and also third in the long jump. Kyler Johnson of Chinook also finished fourth in the 3,200 and was joined in scoring points by Sugarbeeters teammate Wade Schneider, who was sixth in the javelin. Cory Richter was the only athlete for Chester-Joplin-Inverness to place, as he was sixth in the long jump. North Star, which was the host team, got fifth-place finishes from Dylan Miller and Devon Miller in the triple jump and javelin respectively.

“The purpose of this meet and why we have it so early is to get everyone a mark,” Campbell said. “Whether it’s varsity or JV, throwers or runners or jumpers, we want everyone to get a mark. Then you have something to shoot for as the year goes on.”

Many of these same teams will be back in action at the Lions Havre Invitational track meet, hosted by Havre High. The meet will take place Saturday also at the Havre Middle School track.
