Havre area sees two structure fires over the weekend

The Havre fire department responded to two structure fires over the weekend that caused estimated damages of $20,000, a fire department official said.

The Havre Fire Department responded to a fire at Montana State University-Northern Friday morning at 8:43, and to another off U.S. Highway 87 Saturday at 6:04 p.m.

Assistant Chief Kelly Jones said someone was burning grass on the university campus Friday morning when it got out of control. The fire burned the exterior wall on the south side of the gymnasium and broke a basement window in the process.

The fire was extinguished before anyone was hurt and the estimated damage was about $5,000, Kelly said.

The next day, the Havre Fire Department, in conjunction with the Bear Paw Volunteer Fire Department, responded to a fire that would eventually consume about 2 1/2 acres off U.S. Highway 87.

The fire ignited in the grass area, Kelly said, but there is no indication of what started it.

"It was going when we got there," Kelly said. "It started out in the middle, difficult to say what started it."

The blaze spread to a house and garage on the property, wholly consuming the garage. Kelly estimated the damage was about $5,000 on the house and $10,000 on the garage.

No one has lived on the property for three years, Kelly said, adding no one was hurt.
