Powwow season hits north-central Montana

Havre Daily News staff

July has rolled into August again, bringing opportunities for people to experience Native American culture in north-central Montana with three celebrations in a row.

The last weekend in July saw the 53rd Annual Milk River Indian Days at Fort Belknap Agency on Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. This was followed the next week by Rocky Boy's 53rd Annual Celebration on Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation, and another celebration underway this week at the Hays Community Pow-wow, also on the Fort Belknap reservation.

The powwows bring people across the nation and across national borders to dance, socialize, compete in rodeos and stick games, eat, shop and watch.

Aside from this local mini-series, people can experience or participate in local powwows throughout the year, including with Christmas powwows and with the annual Sweetgrass Society powwow held each spring at Montana State University-Northern.

The intense three weeks of festivities wraps up this weekend, however, with main activities tonight through Sunday.

Tonight at 7 at the Hays powwow grounds in Little Peoples Canyon, also called Mission Canyon, sees the start of the powwow with grand entry then dancing, drumming and other events into the evening. Saturday's grand entries and proceedings are at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., following a breakfast feed and then a parade at 10 a.m.

Sunday has another breakfast feed followed by a grand entry at 1 p.m.
