Local Golf Report: Independence Bank wins ladies title

From Tee to Green...

From high school tournaments, to the start of the college golf season, to men's and women's league championships, competitive golf is at an all-time high right now in the Havre area.

And last Thursday was a big, big day at Prairie Farms Golf Course, as the Havre Invitational was held during the day, and the women's league championship match was contested that night.

In the final match of the ladies' league season, Independence Bank bested Northern Montana Hospital 19-17 over the course of the 18-hole finale. Independence Bank was represented by Terry Lilletvedt, Teresa Brown, Maxine Munson and Julie Mariani. Playing for NMH was Terri Earl, Carol Culp, Patti Nault and Kim Klein. Congrats to both teams on a great championship match.

And speaking of Thursday, I'd also like to say congrats to Havre High head coach Brett Gilman. The Havre Invitational was a fantastic high school golf tournament, and not only did the Blue Ponies play well, but every team in attendance, Laurel, Billings Central, Browning, Lewistown, GFH and CMR all enjoyed the course and the event immensely.

As a coach who also runs an all-day Havre Invitational, I can say it's not an easy thing to do. In fact, it's very consuming. So, well done, Brett. It was a great, great day. For more on the Blue Pony golf teams, see a related story on today's sports page.

Last week was also busy at Prairie Farms and Beaver Creek Golf Course for men's leagues, too, as they started their annual trek toward a championship.

Last Tuesday, the opening round of the men's league playoffs at Prairie Farms saw Patrick Construction defeat Wagner Plumbing 18.5-17-5, Hole 19 down Michelob Light 20-16, Northern Edge beat D.A. Davidson 19-17 and Stockman Bank best Gallery Lounge 20.5-15.5 On the other side of the bracket, Korb Construction took down Milk River Engineering 24-12, Valley Furniture knocked off BKD Law 20-16, Bing-N-Bob's took care of Bear Paw Credit Union 23.5-12.5 and Master Sports ousted Havre Ford 23.5-12.5.

The action then moved to the quarterfinals Wednesday night, with four tough matches. None, however, were as close as Bing-N-Bob's 18-18, 3-playoff hole win over Master Sports. The guys finished pretty much in the dark. Valley Furniture also edged Korb Construction 18.5-17.5, while Northern Edge defeated Stockman Bank and Hole 19 downed Patrick Construction, 23.5-12.5.

The men's league playoffs continue tonight at Prairie Farms with the semifinals pitting Bing-N-Bob's against Valley Furniture and Hole 19 taking on Northern Edge.

Last Thursday night also saw the men's league playoffs get started at Beaver Creek Golf Course. Valley Furniture beat Vine 19, S&M Construction took down New Concept Lawn, Grip It N Sip It downed Droppin a Deuce and Nalivka's beat CS&S Labs. The semifinals will take place Thursday night.

More championships are also coming to both Prairie Farms and BCGC, too. The men's club championship at Prairie Farms will take place on Aug. 27, while the women's club championship will be held Sept. 10. The men's club championship at BCGC is slated for Sept. 10 as well.
