HHS spikers battle tough AA foes in Great Falls

The Havre High volleyball will get into the heart of its schedule soon, but this past weekend, the Blue Ponies took part in one last early-season tournament as they competed in the annual Electric City Classic.

The tournament, which was held in Great Falls, was played Friday and Saturday. Havre, which was in the CMR group during pool play, finished eighth out of eight teams, following a 0-6-1 record in group play. Saturday, in the single-elimination phase of the tournament, the Ponies were swept by Billings West 25-16 and 25-17.

Friday in Great Falls, the Ponies played seven, two-set matches, all against Class AA schools. The day opened with Bozeman. The Ponies lost that match 20-19 and 20-12 and followed that up with a defeat at the hands of CMR, 20-14 and 20-16. Then, against Billings Skyview, HHS managed a split, dropping the first set 20-13, before rallying to win the next 20-13.

Against Flathead, the Ponies were competitive, but they ultimately fell to the Braves 20-12 and 20-17. Helena Capital earned the most lopsided victory over Havre, winning 20-9 and 20-6, while Missoula Hellgate and Missoula Sentinel also beat the Ponies, with Hellgate winning 20-15 and 20-14. Sentinel knocked off Havre 20-12 and 20-15.

Despite posting a 0-7-1 record at the Electric City Classic, the Ponies are just 0-2 in regulation matches this season, losing to Belgrade and Livingston Sept. 1. All the other matches have come in tournament play.

The Ponies, who have yet to play a home match this season will be on the road again this week, as they will head to Conrad Saturday. That match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. After the trip to Conrad, Havre will play at home for the first time this season Sept. 22 against Browning, before hosting Cut Bank Sept. 23.
