Final Preparations: Blue Pony golfers head to tough courses

Havre finishes the regular season in Billings, Laurel

One week and two tournaments is all that stands between the Havre High golf teams, and the postseason.

With the Central A Divisional tournament set for Sept. 23, the Blue Ponies, of head coach Brett Gilman, will use this week's trip to the Billings area as a final tune-up for the biggest golf tournaments of the year.

On Thursday, HHS will take part in the Billings Central Invitational at Eaglerock Golf Club. The tournament generally features, Havre, Billings Central, the rest of the Eastern A, as well as junior varsity teams from most of the Class AA schools in Billings. So, the field will be very competitive.

Both Billings Central and Laurel also competed in the Havre Invitational last month at Prairie Farms, but in Billings, the Ponies will also get a look at the likes of Miles City and Hardin.

After 18 holes in Billings on Thursday, Havre will move on to the Laurel Invitational on Friday, where the Ponies will see some of the same teams as Thursday, as well as Sidney and Glendive. The Laurel Invite will also feature the toughest course Havre has played on this season, as the Laurel Country Club is widely known as a very difficult test of golf.

So, there's no doubt, both tournaments will be a great test of where Havre's at as the postseason approaches. And, weather could play a factor as well.

The Blue Pony girls will really get a good measuring stick this week too. The Ponies have been consistently at, or near the top of every leaderboard this season. Junior Teagan Fee has six Top 5 finishes to her credit, while seniors Grace Litzinger and Regan Lammers and junior Kinzee Peterson have also played well throughout the season. Freshman Jocelyn Staples will round out the HHS varsity lineup.

This week also poses the final chance for Havre's first-year boys to get ready for the divisional tournament. Freshmen Josh Warp, Nolan Lotton and Caleb Chambliss have been Havre's steadiest golfers thus far. Clint Owens and Hunter Velk round out Havre's varsity lineup.

Following Havre's tournament in Billings Thursday and Laurel Friday, the Ponies will get set for the Central A tournament, which will be held Sept. 23 in Livingston. The Class A state tournament will be played the following weekend in Sidney.
