Hello God. It's me, Mara

Playgrounds

You know, Lord, a playground scene was observed by Gloria Guggino. In 1978 she wrote about it, entitled it: “Playground Charade.”

Her abridged viewpoint follows:

“The scene before me was a treat to behold. A group of children romped in a playground. Memories were awakened — days of carefree play, long gone from reality but not from memory.  Swings were a favorite pastime, looks like they still are.  So was baseball. Yes, there was a youngster running his legs off to make a home run.

“However, something strange disturbed my reverie. There was an ominous silence, so unusual for children at play. They were no shouts of excitement or shrieks of glee. Was this a giant charade being preformed before my eyes? The children were jumping, swinging, running in a panorama of motion, but something was missing.

“Walking closer the silence was broken by strange, unintelligible sounds. Then I knew. This was real. Suddenly the playground became an example of courage and wisdom. Were I struck with such adversity, would I have the courage to go normally on with my world as these children were doing and the wisdom to know that this was the best way? The area before me was a field where the battle was won.

“These small children could neither hear nor talk. There was a sign in front of the adjacent building: ‘School for The Deaf.’  There was little sound on that playground but there was life in abundance.”

Oh, Lord, that we would exercise courage and wisdom as a little children. Lord, You reminded Your disciples the value that You place on “these little ones” — “children.” Matthew 18:10: “See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of My Father in Heaven.”
