Skylights sink the Argos

Northern spikers on a roll as Carroll come to the Armory tonight

In what was their shortest road trip of the season, the Montana State University-Northern Skylights also played one of their shortest matches of the year.

Fresh off their thrilling win over UM-Western last Saturday, the Skylights went to Great Falls in search of more, and they got it with a three-game sweep of the University of Providence Argos. The Skylights won inside the McLaughlin Center Thursday night, by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-23. The win pushed MSU-N to 2-1 in the Frontier Conference, ahead of their three-match home stand, which starts tonight against Carroll College.

But before Northern turned its attention to the Fighting Saints, the Skylights were focused and sharp against the Argos. MSU-N hit a season-high 322 with 41 kills. The Skylights were equally as good on defense, racking up 14 blocks and 34 digs in the sweep.

Cassie Krueger and Timi Severson each led the offense with 11 kills apiece, but Haley Yoder chipped in with nine, while hitting an incredible .400 for the match. Freshman Shania Neubauer tallied 31 assists, while Krueger served up two aces, and Katia Michelotti, a Great Falls native, had a pair of solo blocks. Hannah Amtmann and Neubauer combined for 22 digs as well, while Northern held UGF to a tough .151 hitting percentage. The taller Argos also had just four blocks in the match.

MSU-N (8-9) will now return to the Armory to host Carroll College in tonight's homecoming match. The action starts at 7. Northern is also home for matches against Montana Tech, next Thursday, and Lewis-Clark State next Saturday.
