The Havre High cross country teams only get to run at home one time per season and this past Saturday, on the campus of Montana State University-Northern, both Blue Pony teams took advantage of the opportunity.

And as far as Havre High head coach Josh Holt was concerned, the day could not have gone better, not only with the weather but with the results as well.

“It was a perfect day, it was sunny out and no rain,” Holt said. “That is a pretty unusual day for a Havre meet. It was a fantastic day this year. The kids were really upbeat and excited. We kind of hinted at them that it would be cool to win their home meet and they went out and did it.”

Both Havre High teams took first place in the Havre Invitational Saturday, as the Pony girls won with 45 points, finishing just ahead of Lewistown and Glasgow, which had 51 and 63 respectively. The boys teams got first with 49 points. Browning was second with 55, followed by Lewistown in third with 58.

While there were plenty of really impressive performances for the Ponies, no one had a better day than sophomore Kadia Miller, who ran a 20:57 to be the girls medalist by 43 seconds. Havre’s Kaylee Nystrom was the second-place finisher with a time of 21:40.

“I have only been here for three years,” Holt said. “But I am not sure if that has happened before, with Kadia and Kaylee finishing first and second. That was great to see. I was tickled pink when I looked and saw the two of them coming in as the top two.”

On the boys side, Sam Fulbright of Lewistown won the individual title (17:22), finishing just ahead of runner-up Isaiah Runs Above (17:42) of Hays-Lodge Pole and Austin Jones of Havre, who was third with a time of 17:44. Jakob Keller of Havre finished sixth (18:14).

Miller and Nystrom may have paced the Havre girls on their way to victory, but freshman Tamera O’Leary was another impressive performer for HHS, as she ended up in ninth after running the course in 22:55. Amelia Miller also had a stellar day, finishing 16th (23:37). The other varsity finishers for the Pony girls were Lilly Taly (29, 25:18), Madison Shennum (37, 27:10) and Rhoda Peterson (42, 27:47).

The Havre boys had two runners finish in the top 10, but their depth was also impressive as six runners finished in the top 25. Trevor Williams was the third finisher for HHS and he wound up 13th (18:45). The others were Cameron Pleninger (17, 19:13), Quinn Reno (22, 19:29), Noah Azure (24, 19:39) and Barrett Kilgore (26, 19:56).

“Our boys team has really come a long way,” Holt said. “Three years ago when I started this, we were just trying to get the boys into the 18s. They were running in the 18s and the 17s and our gap was 5-6 minutes between our first runner and our last runner and now it’s only a few minutes. They have worked really hard and come a long ways, so we are hoping to continue that going into state.”

Both Havre teams will be back in action this week at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula.
