Woman suffers minor injuries in crash

Fell asleep at wheel, Patrol says seat belt a big factor

A woman incurred minor injuries after she fell asleep and drove into a ditch off U.S. Highway 2 East Sunday morning, vaulting the car over an embankment, Montana Highway Patrol says.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Zach Freeman said the woman’s minor injuries could have been far worse.

“She was wearing a seat belt, that played a big role,” he said.

Highway Patrol did not release the name of the driver.

Havre Daily News requested information Monday, but did not receive any until this morning.

The Havre Police dispatch log showed Monday that a caller reported Sunday at 8:36 a.m. that a “vehicle just rolled into the ditch” and the driver’s arm was hanging out of the window.

The woman was traveling westbound in a compact Toyota Yaris hatchback when she fell asleep near mile marker 384, a Montana Highway Patrol release said.

“The vehicle left its lane of travel, ran off the left side of the road, and entered the south ditch. The vehicle continued through the ditch until the front of the vehicle struck an embankment, causing the vehicle to vault,” the release said.

The Yaris was heavily damaged in the front.

The release said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
