Hearing Tuesday on street tax levy

Havre City Council will hold public hearings Tuesday, Oct 3 and Wednesday, Oct 18, at 7 p.m. at City Hall to discuss a mill levy proposal that would help fund repairs for city streets.

If the proposal is approved by Havre voters in November’s city elections, it is expected to raise $15 million over 20 years, $750,000 annually.

The proposal would cost property owners within city limits with a property with a taxable value of $100,000 an additional $89.50 annually and properties valued at $200,000 an extra $179.

Council at their Aug. 7 meeting passed a resolution to place the proposal on the ballot.

A similar and larger mill levy that would have generated $30 million over 20 years or $1.5 million a year was rejected by voters in 2015.
