Pony girls shine in Sidney

HHS golfer Teagan Fee notches Class A All-State honors for the second straight year

For the second year in a row, the Havre High girls golf team put forth a strong showing in their final 36 holes of the season.

At this weekend's Class A State Tournament at the Sidney Country Club, the Pony girls, of head coach Brett Gilman, finished sixth in the team title chase, while they brought home an All-State golfer for the second straight season as well.

The Ponies finished with a final team total of 877 to place sixth after finishing fifth a year ago. Sidney won the girls team title with a 722, finishing in front of Central A champion Lewistown, and Whitefish which was third.

"The girls had a great year," Gilman said. "They didn't quite put it all together at the same time. They didn't all play well at the same time as each other, but they had a great year. Regan (Lammers) and Grace (Litzinger) have been a consistent part of our team for four years, and it's been a pleasure to coach them. It was a pleasure to coach this entire team, and I'm proud of the season they had and all they accomplished."

Meanwhile, HHS junior Teagan Fee earned Class A All-State honors for the second year in a row. Fee shot rounds of 91 and 101 to place ninth. Fee posted a 15th-place finish last season, but in her third year of varsity golf, was able to crack the Class A's Top 10.

"Extremely proud of Teagan," Gilman said. "She finished in the Top 10 and improved by six places from last year. She did a great job, and it sets her up to have a really big senior year."

Blue Pony seniors Regan Lammers and Grace Litzinger were next for HHS. Lammers shot 117 Friday and 109 Saturday for a 226, while Litzinger shot 114 and 115, respectively, for a 229. Junior Kinzee Peterson finished at 230, with rounds of 118 and 112, while freshman Jocelyn Staples posted rounds of 127 and 123 in her first state tournament.

While the HHS girls performed well in Sidney, two Blue Pony boys also gained valuable experience. Havre freshmen Nolan Lotton and Caleb Chambliss played in their first state tournament, with Chambliss shooting a 202. Chambliss finished with rounds of 104 and 98, with both rounds being good scores for the first-timer. Lotton finished with rounds of 113 and 120 for a 233.

The Laurel boys captured the Class A state title with a 654, with Polson coming in second. But the big story was Libby junior Ryggs Johnston, who captured his third MHSA golf state championship. Johnston broke the Class A scoring record with rounds of 68-66. He won his first two state titles with Libby being a member of Class B. The Loggers moved back up to Class A for the 2017-18 school year.

"The boys that went to state gained valuable experience," Gilman said. "Our entire boys team learned so much this season, and they were a lot of fun to coach. And if they keep working at it, I think there is a lot of promise for Blue Pony boys golf in the future."
