Hi-Line Football: Pioneers win regular season finale

Hi-Line Football Roundup

Going into last Wednesday's game with Augusta, the Big Sandy Pioneers had their first chance at clinching a spot in the Six-Man playoffs for the first time in five years. And Big Sandy was determined not to let the Elks stand in its way.

The Pioneers, who beat Geraldine/Highwood the week before, easily dismissed the Elks 43-6 last Wednesday at home, clinching a berth in the playoffs. What made things even better for the 7-2 Pioneers, was that with Valier's win over Power-Dutton-Brady Saturday, Big Sandy clinched the second seed in the Six-Man North, which means a home playoff game. It will be the first hosted by Big Sandy since the 2012 Six-Man state championship game.

"It really will mean a lot of our players, our school and our community," Big Sandy head coach Ronnie Simpson said. "This group has really worked hard over the years and continued to improve, so they deserve it. They have earned it."

Against the Elks, Big Sandy used a dominating run game, the same it has used to beat the competition all season. Kade Strutz broke off two long touchdown runs, followed by another from Weston Allderdice to make it 23-0. Then Strutz caught a touchdown pass from Bryant Jones. Allderdice scored a 65-yard rushing touchdown just before halftime. In the end, Big Sandy racked up 330 rushing yards and 471 yards of total offense in the win.

The Pioneers (7-2) will host Richey-Lambert Saturday in the first round of the Six-Man playoffs in a battle of ranked teams.

"We really believe in running the football and playing defense," Simpson said. "That's going to be what wins games in the playoffs."
