RezQ Dogs sets Pizza Hut fundraiser

A local organization is holding a Pizza Hut fundraiser Thursday to help cover some medical expenses — the medical expense for rescued dogs.

Jim Wilke of RezQ Dogs said many of the animals he and his wife, Anita, have been taking in lately have needed medical treatment.

“We just got so spanked this year for medical needs for animals,” he said. “We’ve just ran into that time and time again this year, for some reason.”

RezQ Dogs is located on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation near Dodson. It rescues animals mainly from Fort Belknap, Havre and Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation, but also takes dogs from throughout the region, and primarily is funded through donations. Wilke said that with the extra medical expenses, they are needing some help.

Wilke said this has been a busy year so far in general, even without the medical expenses. He estimated the shelter and their foster homes have close to 50 dogs in care now, and are probably going to rescue more dogs this year than last.

“We’re off to a pretty big start this year,” he said, adding that the shelter typically rescues 200 to 300 dogs a year.

“We get a lot of special cases that need special attention and special homes,” he said.

Thursday, whenever someone making a purchase at Pizza Hut says they are donating to RezQ Dogs, 20 percent of the purchase price will go to its fund.
