Hi-Line Volleyball: Knights fight their way to a 6C East title

Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

For the first time in five seasons, the District 6C East volleyball championship trophy didn't make its way back to Chinook. Instead, the North Star Knights took it home with them.

Friday night in Chester, North Star took down the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks by scores of 25-27, 25-10, 25-22 and 25-17 to win the 2017 6C East title. North Star went undefeated in the tournament, and got 11 kills from Peytan King, as well as 18 assists, four blocks and three aces from Paij Peterson in the championship match. CJI, which made a great run on its home floor over the two-day tournament, was led by Khloe Kammerzell's nine kills and three blocks, while Kendahl Knapton had 19 digs and two aces.

"Winning the championship was such a great feeling for us coaches and our girls," North Star head coach McKenzie Jenkins said. "It has been quite a few years since it has been done for North Star. I think every girl on our team bought into believing in themselves and their ability to win the tournament. The girls played for each other and it showed on the court."

The Hawks and Knights met earlier in the day as well, playing a five-set thriller in the unbeaten semifinal match. In that match, North Star won by scores of 16-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-8 and 15-10 in what was a back-and-forth battle that launched North Star into the championship match. King had 14 kills and an ace, while Grace Farinas had four blocks for the Knights. The Hawks got 20 kills and a block from Kammerzell, while Peyton Hawks had 39 assists.

"We had a great district tournament. The girls were really excited and ready to play going into the tournament on Thursday," Jenkins noted. "We were certainly pushed by Box Elder and CJI, but I was happy with the way the girls responded when we faced some adversity. I thought we were much more aggressive during the tournament than we have been the past couple of weeks and our defense showed great improvement as well."

The loss to the Knights dropped CJI into Friday afternoon's third-place match, where the Hawks beat Chinook for a second time. In that match, CJI swept by scores of 25-13, 34-32 and 25-21. Kim Ghekiere had 21 kills from CJI, while Megan Molyneaux had eight kills, three aces and 16 digs for the Sugarbeeters.

Chinook stayed alive Friday by beating upstart Box Elder in the fourth-place match. The Beeters won by scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-21, with Kourtney Hanson totaling eight kills and six blocks. Box Elder, which was eliminated with the loss, had 24 kills, with Lilly Gopher tallying nine.

The tournament got underway Thursday morning with the Bears sweeping Big Sandy by scores of 25-13, 25-6 and 25-17. In the win, Gopher had 11 kills and Tallen Oats served three aces. Jaylyn Cline led the Pioneers with three kills. In the other first-round match, CJI swept Hays-Lodge Pole by scores of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-13, with Ghekiere and Knapton combining for 17 kills.

In the second round Thursday, CJI showed its prowess by upsetting Chinook 9-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20. Ghekiere and Kamerzell combined for 16 kills, while Peyton Hawks had 28 assists and five aces. Erin Pula led Chinook with eight kills and three blocks, while Sierra Swank finished with 19 assists, two aces and 18 digs.

North Star had its hands full with Box Elder in the second round as well, but the Knights prevailed by scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-23. King and Peterson combined for 20 kills, while Lily Pedersen and Chelsea Donaldson combined for 32 digs. Gopher had 19 kills and 15 assists, as well as three aces for Box Elder. The Bears would advance later Thursday with a sweep of HLP, by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-8. Eve The Boy had seven kills for the Bears in the loser-out win.

Chinook also kept its hopes of reaching the Northern C alive Thursday night with a sweep of Big Sandy. The Beeters won by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-16. Sierra Swank had 10 assists, an ace and 11 digs in the win. Cline finished with five kills and Dakota Terry had three blocks in what was Big Sandy's final match of the year.

Now, North Star, CJI and Chinook will all move on to the Northern C Divisional, Thursday through Saturday in Chinook. The top two teams from the Northern C will advance to the Class C state tournament next weekend in Bozeman.
