Havre area athletes head to Helena for basketball

Special Olympians Sheila and Shelly Kidd, who are sisters, wait at the end of a line of luggage this morning outside of Havre High School for the bus that will take them to Helena to compete in the Special Olympics Montana State Basketball Tournament. Havre is sending 23 athletes and family, friends and supporters to the tournament, which includes a variety of activities and special events in Helena, Clancy and Montana City today, Friday and Saturday. The event begins with opening ceremonies tonight and the Havre players are scheduled to hit teams from Bozeman and Great Falls in five-on-five basketball games. The activities also will include individual competitions along with a carnival and dance Friday night.

Havre area Special Olympic athletes will spend, starting today, three days in the Helena region, where they will participate in the 2017 fall games State Basketball Tournament.

About 13 athletes departed this morning at about 8:30 and some are scheduled to take the court twice Friday, Special Olympics Area Director Dave Carlson said Wednesday.

Havre's athletes will play five-on-five basketball as well as take part in individual competitions that include shooting, passing and dribbling. Friday's games will be against teams from Bozeman and Great Falls, Carlson said.
