Henny Penny awarded for best desserts

For the second consecutive year, Henny Penny Cupcakes and Cake Creations, a shop that serves homemade cupcakes, soups and sandwiches, has been ranked as having the number one desserts in Havre by a customer review website.

The award is from TripAdvisor.com, a website that allows patrons to rank the hotels, motels and restaurants within individual communities based on their experiences.

Penny Velk, owner of Henny Penny, said she was a little surprised when in September a representative called her to tell her that she received the award.

"I work hard, so it's nice to see a little recognition for all the hard work," she said.

Velk said the award is all the more impressive to her because is it is based on what customers say. Henny Penny's page on TripAdviser.com and the certificate Velk received says customers gave Henny Penny a four-and-a-half star rating.

"My goal is to get to five stars but I don't know if I can make it," Velk said.

Velk said her daughter encouraged her to start selling the cupcakes she makes.

When she began to bake professionally, Velk said, health codes prevented her from selling goods she made in her personal kitchen. She later began using different commercial kitchens to make her cupcakes, but said packing and unpacking her supplies soon became too much work. Velk eventually decided to get a place of her own.

She set up her bakery on Third Avenue next to the Lunch Box and expanded her menu to include homemade chili, soups and rolls. She moved to the shops current location at 234 Fourth Ave., across the street, west, from the Independence Bank parking lot.

"I never dreamed it would be what it is," Velk said.

After the restaurant moved to its new location, Henny Penny expanded its menu to include sandwiches and salads.

Velk said she and her five employees have provided customers with good food and service in a good atmosphere. However people were so used to visiting Henny Penny at their former location, she said customers might now have trouble finding them.

She said a sign was recently purchased that hangs above the shop entrance that Velk says she hopes makes the shop easier for people to find.
