The Havre High wrestling team may have lost three state champions from last season, but as the Blue Ponies showed in the Havre Invitational Saturday, their lineup is as talented as ever.

When it was all said and done, the Ponies placed a total of 12 in the top three at the Havre Invite, which was held Saturday inside the HHS gymnasium. Havre finished with eight individual champions and had 11 finalists.

Mick Chagnon (103), Quinn Reno (120), Marc Ramirez (126), Ryan Stewart (132), Lane Paulson (138), Martin Wilkie (145), Connor Harris (152) and Tyler Schaub (205) all took home individual titles as Havre racked up 250.5 points on its way to the team title. Great Falls High was second with 194 and Lewistown was third with 171.5. Chinook finished sixth with 47 points, while Chester-Joplin-Inverness, another local team, was eighth with three points.

Outside of the eight first-place finishers, Havre also had three wrestlers take second in Cameron Pleninger (113), Mason Dionne (170) and Austin Ratliff (HWT). Taylor Gopher was third at 160 pounds.

"I was really pleased with the kids," HHS head coach Scott Filius said. "We still aren't in good enough shape to wrestle six minutes, but we are getting there. It was a lot of fun."

The Havre Invite is significant to Pony wrestling for a couple reasons. For one, it's the first meet of the season, but secondly, it's one of the few chances HHS gets to compete at home. Schaub, a former 205-pound state champion, made his long-awaited return to the mat, after missing almost all of last season due to injury and returned to the winner's circle in dominant fashion. He won his first two matches by pin, then won the final over Jensen Poirer of Great Falls High by a score of 18-2, which counts as a technical fall.

"It was good to see Schaub and Stewart win but I expect that of those guys," Filius said. "I was more impressed with some of our young guys and how they came out and competed."

Stewart, who was the only other senior in action for Havre Saturday, also won his weight class in his final go around at the Havre Invite. Stewart earned his first-place finish by pinning two opponents, including Cache Hilliard of Great Falls.

"It always means a lot to win here and wrestle at home," Stewart said. "I didn't win (the Havre Invitational) when I was a freshman, but I am glad I was able to win it the next three years, especially now as a senior."

Stewart, who has also placed three times at the state tournament, said he will miss the atmosphere at the Pony Corral.

"It's always great wrestling here," Stewart said. "Our fans do a great job of supporting us and you can always hear them cheering for you and that gets you pumped up."

Schaub and Stewart were both impressive in their title runs, but so was Wilkie. The two-time state champion won at 145 pounds after getting three first-period pin falls. Reno's win in the finals at 120 pounds was anything but easy, as he rallied from a 5-0 deficit to get a pin at the 5:02 mark over Jarrett Lemaster of CMR.

At 103 pounds, Chagnon, a freshman, earned his first title at the Havre Invite with a last-second pin of Dre Coles of Great Falls High. It came at the 5:59 mark, with just one second left on the clock.

Ramirez won his first title at the meet in as a sophomore, winning a 10-5 decision over Carter Carroll of CMR. Paulson won three decision en route to winning his title. He knocked off Braeden Lomas of Great Falls 12-0 in the 138-pound final. Harris, the other individual champion, claimed his crown with a 10-4 decision over Caeton Mears of Malta.

Pleninger, who was a runner-up at state last season, also finished runner-up Saturday, dropping the final at 113 pounds to Caleb Birdwell of Lewistown 12-3. Ratliff fell to K.C. Buday of CMR 9-5 to finish second in the heavyweight class and at 170 pounds, in maybe the most exciting match of the day, Dionne, a sophomore, lost to J.R. Seewald of Cut Bank 10-5.

"Even though he ended up losing the match," Filius said. "I think Dionne is probably the kid that impressed me the most. He just continued to fight and battle all the way to the end."

In terms of other local teams, Chinook had the best day, as the Sugarbeeters finished with a total of 47 points. The top individual performance for the Beeters came from freshman Austin Swanson, who notched a third-place showing at 103 pounds. Fellow freshman Garrett Pruttis finished fifth.

"I think that we have a long ways to go," Chinook head coach Perry Miller said. "But we will get there. The thing I liked about the kids today, is how they competed and how quickly they got up off the mat."

Havre will head to Butte this week to take part in the Butte Central Mixer Thursday, followed by the Mining City Duals, which will be Friday and Saturday.
