Havre High boys split road openers at Sidney, Glendive

The Havre High boys basketball team was faced with the daunting task of back-to-back road games after a lengthy bus trip to the Eastern side of the state.

However, by the time the Blue Ponies were heading home, the trip proved to be well worth it after splitting games between Sidney and Glendive. Havre dropped its opening game of the weekend to Sidney Friday 46-32, but rebounded to knock off the Red Devils 52-40 Saturday.

“Overall, I thought it was a good weekend,” HHS head coach Curt Leeds said. “The kids were really excited to play, and I thought we got better on offense and defense throughout the two games. But going on a long trip and coming away with a win, that's huge for us early in the season, especially with it being the first weekend.”

In the first game of the weekend, Havre battled Sidney and early on, the Eagles used their size to their advantage as they built an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Yet, in the second, Havre was able to cut into the lead and at intermission, the Ponies trailed 18-15.

Despite being down by just three to start the second half, Havre just had no answer on defense for Bridger Larson and Aaron Entz. Led by those two, who ended up scoring 35 of the Eagles 46 points, Sidney pushed its lead back to double digits before running away by 14 in the fourth quarter.

Entz led all scorers in the game with 18 points, while Larson, the 6-6 big man, finished with 17 for Sidney. Jacob Irvin was the top scorer for Havre with 10 points. Tanner Parsons also contributed with eight. Ivar Aageson added six.

“The disappointing thing for us was that we talked about two guys that were going to try and beat us in Entz and Larson,” Leeds said. “And then both of those guys went out and had 18 points and 17 points.”

The next night against Glendive, the Ponies were stellar on the defensive end from the opening tap. Laz Windy Boy scored five points early for HHS, including one 3-pointer, as the Ponies and Red Devils played to an 11-11 tie after the opening stanza.

Yet, in the second quarter, Havre started to take control, getting four points from Aageson, as well as seven points from Parsons, including a trey, to grab a 27-18 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Havre was able to keep the Red Devils at bay. Glendive did creep within eight points late in the fourth quarter, but seven points by Aageson, including five free throws and one 2-pointer, helped HHS hang on for the 12-point win.

Aageson led all scorers in the game with 14 points. Parsons finished with 11 points, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers, with one each in the second and third quarters, while Irvin pitched in with seven and Laz Windy Boy wound up with five.

“I thought we improved a lot defensively over the weekend,” Leeds said. “I was a little disappointed the first night. But the rest of it was good. Offensively, we struggled in the first game. We didn’t run our offense very well and took a lot of quick shots. But in the second game against Glendive, the players learned, they adjusted, they ran the offense a lot better Saturday and that created some good shots and we were able to score some more points. All the kids played with excitement when they were out there and that was really good to see.”

The Ponies (1-1) will be back in action Friday, when they will host Belgrade in the first of back-to-back Central A conference games at the HHS gymnasium. Havre will also host Livingston Saturday.
