Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Bears, Morning Stars cruise at NAC

High school girls basketball is back on the Hi-Line. And if the first full week of action is any indication, it's going to be an exciting season in our area.

Normally, this weekend is reserved for the Native American Classic in Havre, but the tournament was moved to Salish-Kootenai College for this year, and that's where Box Elder, Rocky Boy and Harlem opened their seasons.

Thursday night, Box Elder began its march towards a Class C title with a 68-34 thrashing of Arlee in Pablo, while back on the Hi-Line, the CJI Preseason Tournament also got underway Thursday night.

North Star debuted with an easy, 60-29 win over Power. Topanga Watson scored a game-high 13 points for the Knights, while Chelsea Donaldson had 11.

Also in Chester Thursday, Big Sandy began its season with a heartbreaking 24-20 loss to Dutton-Brady. The Pioneers trailed 23-13 after three quarters, and while they outscored the Diamondbacks 7-1 in the fourth, it wasn't quite enough. Lainey Gregory led the Pioneers with seven points.

Chinook made its debut Friday in Chester, and the Sugarbeeters edged Dutton-Brady 34-23. Chinook outscored the Diamondbacks 8-2 in the final eight minutes for the win. Erin Pula led the Beeters with eight points.

In a non-conference game between 9C teams Friday in Chester, North Star thumped Big Sandy 54-17. The Knights used a 16-0 third-quarter run to pull away.

Paij Peterson scored 18 points for the Knights, while Chelsea Donaldson had 11. Lainey Gregory scored 10 for the Pioneers.

The Chester-Joplin-Inverness girls also opened their season Friday night, on their home floor. And the Hawks blew by Sunburst, 72-13. CJI exploded for 31 points in the first quarter, and Peyton Hawks scored 16 points in the win. Kendahl Knapton chipped in with 13 points and Samantha May scored 12.

Friday night also saw Fort Benton open its season with a blowout win over Simms at the Fort Benton Tournament. The Longhorns blasted the Tigers, 72-33.

Back at the NAC in Pablo Friday, Rocky Boy opened its season with a 67-49 win over Class C Arlee. The Morning Stars got 19 points from Adrienne Gopher and 16 by Sasha Coffee in the win. Harlem also rolled to a season-opening win with a 55-25 victory over the Browning JV. Skylee Dirden and Autumn Eagleman combined for 25 points in the win for the Wildcats.

Saturday's final day of action at the NAC saw Rocky Boy cruise to a perfect 2-0 start to the season after the Morning Stars blew out the Browning JV, 89-45. Sasha Coffee had 20 points, while Adrienne Gopher scored 15, Jaylynn Mitchell added 12 and Sean Henry chipped in with 10.

Saturday night in Pablo also saw Box Elder and Harlem go head-to-head, and the Class B Wildcats were no match for the Bears. Box Elder rolled to an 80-41 win to start 2-0 on the year.

In Chester Saturday, The Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks got in on the winning act by beating Power 48-33. The Hawks outscored the Titans 28-6 in the first half, and got 16 points from Korrin Harmon and 11 by Peyton Hawks.

Chinook also crushed Sunburst Saturday in Chester, 65-11. The Beeters held the Refiners scoreless in the fourth quarter, and got 14 points from Megan Molyneaux, 13 by Sierra Swank, and Carrie Hofer and Rachel Gunderson added a combined 20.

Fort Benton also made it a 2-0 start at home Saturday night as the Longhorns got a big win over arch rival Great Falls Central. In a Northern C showdown, the Horns outscored the Mustangs 39-15 in the second half. Aspen Giese led the way with 13 points for the Longhorns.
