Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Stars, Wildcats, Knights all roll in week two

It was another exciting weekend of local boys high school basketball as teams from along the Hi-Line entered into conference play for the first time this season.

One team that had some serious business to take care of this past weekend was the Rocky Boy Stars, who took on Conrad, Shelby and Fairfield, last Thursday, Friday and Saturday within the District 1B.

And after those three games, it's becoming clear that if there is a favorite in the always challenging 1B, it's probably the Stars. First, Rocky Boy drilled Conrad at home last Thursday, by the score of 70-41, before paying a visit to Shelby, the third-place finisher at state a season ago.

The two teams met in the Northern B semifinals last season, when the Coyotes ran Rocky Boy out of the building. Yet, Friday night in Shelby, the exact opposite happened. The Stars grabbed a 10-point lead after the first quarter and by halftime, led by 16. When the game was over, the Stars would win by 20, 69-49. Kendall Windy Boy dominated inside with 23 points, while Kordell Small added 15, as did Olin Arkinson. Ben Iron Eyes also pitched in with 11. Rocky Boy also knocked off Fairfield Saturday at home 75-67.

Also in Class B basketball, in the District 2B, Harlem joined Rocky Boy in notching some big wins this weekend. First, the Wildcats knocked off Malta at home Friday, 59-53. Then, after defeating the defending Class B state champs, Harlem won its second game of the weekend Saturday, besting Wolf Point 59-56. Brad Cichosz scored 26 to lead the Wildcats. Ryle Foote also contributed with 21. Rocky Boy (3-1) and Harlem (2-2) will meet Tuesday in Rocky Boy.

As far as the District 9C was concerned, all teams were in action both Friday and Saturday, but one of the marque games came Friday night in Hays, when the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds played host to Chinook.

The T-Birds and Sugarbeeters were two of the three teams to advance of out of the 9C last season, but right now, Chinook looks like the team to beat, especially after dismantling HLP 88-56 Friday night. The Beeters scored 49 points in the first half and held a 25-point halftime advantage. Freshman Ethan Bell led Chinook with a game-high 19 points. His brother Isaac Bell also added 16 to go along with 16 points from Riley Kellam and 12 from Reese Elliot. Chance Main led the T-Birds with 18.

Fort Benton, which opened its season 1-1, welcomed Big Sandy into its gym Friday night, but the Longhorns made quick work of the Pioneers after opening up a 35-15 first-half lead. Fort Benton would go on to to win, 71-35. Logan Giles led Fort Benton with 19. Damon Bird also had a solid night with 16. Ryan Roth led the Pioneers with eight.

North Star played the first of two home games over the weekend Friday against Turner. The game was close in the first half, but eventually, the Knights ran away from the Tornadoes and scored the 65-42 win. Dylan Miller scored 31 in the win for the Knights. Devon Miller also contributed with 13. Cody Welsh led Turner with 15 in defeat.

Also in the 9C Friday night, LaVon Myers got his first head-coaching win for Box Elder, as the Bears rolled CJI 66-43.

After knocking off the Hawks, Box Elder traveled to North Star Saturday for a battle of 1-0 teams in the 9C. The Knights and Bears battled to the end, but regulation wasn't enough time to decide it, as the score was tied at 54-54 through four quarters. Yet, in the extra frame, the Knights clamped down defensively, outscoring Box Elder 6-0, to notch the 60-54 win.

Dylan Miller was outstanding again for the Knights, pouring in 28 points. Devon Miller was also stellar, finishing with 26. Christopher Burns led the Bears with 15 point. Cain McDowell was right behind him with nine.

While North Star was able to open the district season 2-0, Chinook joined them Saturday night with a 68-23 home win over Big Sandy, which fell to 0-2. Fort Benton, also joined a slew of 2-0 teams at the top of the district, following a 63-54 win over Turner on the road Saturday.

Fort Benton led 28-25 at the half, but led by only two, 43-41 going into the fourth quarter. However, 20 points in the final stanza helped the Longhorns ice the win. Hayden Diekhans led the Longhorns with 21 points. Bird also finished with 16. Welsh had 22 in the losing effort for the Tornadoes.

The other 9C game Saturday, saw HLP get its first win of the season in the 9C, thanks to a 52-43 win over CJI in Chester. Chance Main led the T-Birds with 15 points. Tyler Wanken led the Hawks with 12.
