Sidney topples short-handed Blue Ponies

In its final competition on the mat before the holiday break, the Havre High wrestling team went to Sidney Thursday night, for a dual against its Eastern A rival.

The two teams, which have been the powers in Class A wrestling for years, met again in Sidney Thursday and this time, it was the Eagles that came out on top by a score of 48-12.

Of the 13 weights, Havre won four matches, but also had two open weights. Sidney won seven matches outright, including five by pin. The Eagles also won two matches by decision and got two by forfeit.

For the Ponies, the news wasn’t all bad. Ryan Stewart notched a 7-5 win over Kade Graves at 126 pounds. Then at 138 pounds, Lane Paulson got a 9-4 victory over Waylon VanBuren, while Martin Wilkie beat Jace Winter 9-2 at 145 pounds. The other win for the Ponies came at 152 pounds, as Connor Harris beat Jace Johnson by way of a 4-2 decision.

Yet, in the lighter weights and the heavier weight class, the Eagles cleaned up. Kaiden Cline pinned Mick Chagnon of Havre at 103 pounds in 3:49. Sidney then got a pin by Jordan Darby over Hunter Velk at 113 pounds. At 120 pounds, Quinn Reno lost an 8-2 decision to Kade Graves and at 132 pounds, Marc Ramirez fell to Christian Dean 6-1.

After getting a win from Harris at 152 pounds, Havre didn’t win another match. Avery Gurney pinned Taylor Gopher at 160 pounds in 53 seconds. Then, Mason Dionne lost a hard-fought match at 170 pounds, getting pinned by Jeff Jones at the 5:19 mark in the third period. Havre gave up matches at 182 and 205 pounds after leaving those spots vacant, then in the heavyweight division, Ryan Horner pinned Austin Ratliff in 4:53.

The Ponies will be off for the holiday break but will return to the mat Jan. 5-6 when they will take part in the Cut Bank Invitational.
