Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Chinook rolls on, HLP wins at North Star

With the holiday break approaching, local high school boys basketball teams played games as early as Monday and as late as Friday, to try and get them all in before adjourning for two weeks.

In the District 9C, the action started Monday in Turner, as the Tornadoes hosted Chester-Joplin-Inverness. The two teams contested a hard-fought game, but in the end, the home team got the 62-55 win. Cody Welsh led the Tornadoes with 25 points, while Eddie Harmon finished with 21. Jackson Diemert had 20 in the loss for CJI. Tyler Wanken finished with 13.

After beating the Hawks, Turner hosted Dodson Tuesday in a non-conference game and fell by a score of 57-53. Welsh led Turner with 26 points in the loss. Harmon added 14.

Inside the district Tuesday, there was a big game between Box Elder and Chinook. The Sugarbeeters are trying to dethrone the Bears as district champs and took a first step toward doing that with a 70-51 win over Box Elder in Chinook Tuesday. Isaac Bell poured in 28 for the Beeters in the win. Riley Kellam also had 20. Christopher Burns had 17 for the Bears. Tanner Parisian also added 16.

Following its win over the Bears, Chinook traveled to Chester to take on the Hawks. And thanks to 25 points from Hunter Neibauer and 19 from Kellam, the Beeters rolled to a 69-34 win. Wanken scored 13 to lead CJI in defeat.

In another key district game in the 9C, Hays-Lodge Pole paid a visit to North Star and handed the Knights their first loss of the season with a 55-35 win. The Thunderbirds limited North Star to one point in the third quarter. Jeffrey Stiffarm scored 11 for HLP. Chance Main added nine. Dylan Miller scored 24 in the win. Devon Miller had eight.

Fort Benton was also in action Thursday but played a non-conference opponent in Conrad of Class B. The Longhorns put up a good fight, but ultimately fell 56-53. Garrett Diekhans scored 18 to lead the way. Andy Giles finished with 12. Of the other 9C teams playing out of district Thursday, Box Elder knocked off Geraldine-Highwood 63-54, and Big Sandy lost to Denton-Geyser-Stanford 69-17.

In another important 9C matchup Friday night, North Star paid a visit to Fort Benton and, thanks to a stellar defensive effort in the fourth quarter, escaped with a 47-46 win. The Knights trailed by two entering the final stanza but held the Longhorns to just three points in the final eight minutes.

The win improved the Knights' record to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the 9C. Dylan Miller led the way with 15. North Star also got 13 from Caden Retting and nine from Devon Miller. Damon Bird scored 15 to pace Fort Benton, which also got 14 from Andy Giles.

Thursday night also saw Box Elder get back into the win column with a 63-54 win over Geraldine-Highwood in Geraldine.

In Class B action Tuesday night in Harlem, Rocky Boy knocked off the Wildcats 72-61. The Stars are now 4-1 with their only loss coming to Arlee, the defending Class C state champion in the Native American Classic.
