Chippewa Cree Tribe urges people to be cautious, limit travel during snow storm

Chippewa Cree Tribe is urging drivers to use caution and minimize travel if possible Friday night through Monday, due to a winter storm.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather service in Great Falls for Friday until 5 p.m. Saturday, with periods of snowfall of near one-inch an hour, a winter weather message from the Weather Service in Great Falls says.

Dustin White, tribal emergency management coordinator for the tribe, and the tribal water resources director said Friday night that the tribe has issued a public notice urging drivers to be cautious on the roads.

A copy of the notice, posted on the official Facebook page of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy Montana late Friday says conditions are and will be extremely hazardous through Monday.

"Travelers should only be only be on the roadway for emergency traveling only. If people are traveling roadways, please use extreme caution when driving, prepare your vehicle with emergency equipment and notify family members or friends of departure times and destinations." the notice says.

Rocky Boy Police Department received reports of cars veering off into ditches on reservation roads, Rocky Boy Police Dispatcher Trista Arkinson said. No injuries, she said, had been reported as of Friday night.

The notice says that if residential homes experience power outages, frozen pipes, pipe breakages. sewer plugs or other heating issues to contact the Rocky Boy Police Department at 406-395-4513.

Rocky Boy Police will have an on-call list for the Chippewa Cree Housing, Public Works and Road Department staff who will be available to respond to emergency calls.

Tribal Water Resources, the notice said, will have staff and equipment on-stand-by for emergency calls. Protocols for emergency calls will be followed are residents must either contact Rocky Boy Police or White to report an emergency, who will then dispatch Tribal Water Resources staff to assess and assist with emergency situations.
