Bob was born July 25, 1926, to Martha (Wendland) and Conrad Kaftan in Harvey, North Dakota. Bob grew up during the great depression and had his first job of driving a delivery truck, at age 13! After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving during WW II. After leaving the Navy, Bob attended the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks, obtaining a Bachelor of Education degree, in 1950.

Bob's first teaching job was at Havre High School in 1954, where he taught history for one year. He then decided to move to eastern Montana, to teach in Sydney. It was at this time, that Bob's life was forever changed, when he met the love of his life, Genevieve. After a whirlwind courtship, the couple married on July 26, 1958. The newlyweds packed up their belongings and moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Bob completed his Master's in Education. Ever the avid scholar, Bob led his growing family to Missoula, where he completed his Ph.D. in psychology in 1966. He then accepted a teaching position at Northern Montana College in Havre in 1966. While working in Havre, Bob obtained his credentials to become a licensed counselor as well as owning Maranatha Christian Supply with Gen.

Bob officially retired in 1991.

Bob's retirement years were active, punctuated with working part-time as a Christian counselor, a family counselor at Head Start and supervising new counselors throughout the state. He also served on several boards and community organizations, including the Havre City Council.

Bob's pasttime was filled with long walks, Bible studies, gardening and long drives with Gen. He also took great pleasure in working on small construction jobs alongside his sons. Ever the family man, Bob delighted spending time with his numerous grandchildren, reading, drawing and sharing childhood stories. Even in the last two years of his life, Bob and Gen were often seen around town, enjoying a meal with various grandchildren or friends, usually at the local McDonald's. While Bob will be forever missed by his family and friends, we rejoice that he is in the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, and is reunited with Gen and their son Gary.

Bob is survived by four sons: Rick (Barbara) of Belgrade, Mike (Sandy) of Billings, Alan (Kim) of Havre and Jon (Gina) of Havre; sisters, Elaine, Loma Linda, CA, Darlene, Blue Springs, MO, and treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
