Hi-Line Boys Roundup: Sugarbeeters, Stars keep on winning

As local basketball teams delve deeper and deeper into conference play, the games are only going to get bigger and bigger.

And this past weekend, no games along the Hi-line were more important than the showdown in the District 9C as two teams at the top of the boys basketball standings in the district met in Chinook. Sixth-ranked North Star was hoping to knock off the Sugarbeeters and tie them atop the standings. Yet, the Beeters had other ideas and cruised to a 64-44 win.

Chinook led by 10 points at halftime and controlled the game throughout the second half as they improved to 6-0 in the 9C. Isaac Bell, Cord Schneider and Riley Kellem all led Chinook with 12 points. Ethan Bell also pitched in with 10. Dylan Miller scored 25 in the loss for the Knights.

After beating North Star Friday night, Chinook went on the road to take on the fourth-place team in the district, Fort Benton and once again, the Beeters came away with the win, knocking off the Longhorns 66-58. Schneider scored 16 to lead Chinook. Isaac Bell also added 15. Hayden Diekhans led Fort Benton with 17, and Andy Giles pitched in with 16.

The Beeters are now 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the 9C. With their victories over North Star, Hays-Lodge Pole and Fort Benton, they also have wins over each of their closet competitors

While Fort Benton dropped its second game of the weekend Saturday, the Longhorns got off to a good start Thursday, thanks to a 52-44 road win over Chester-Joplin-inverness. Garrett Diekhans led the Longhorns with 13 points. Andy Giles and Hayden Diekhans also pitched in with 10. Evan Dahinden led the Hawks with a 17-point game. Tyler Wanken also scored 13 points in the loss. Fort Benton is 4-3 in the district and 6-4 overall.

Elsewhere in the 9C Thursday, Box Elder edged out Turner for its second district win of the season. Turner lost to the Bears Thursday night, but turned around Saturday and knocked off Big Sandy, 74-65 to earn a split. Hays-Lodge Pole also knocked off Box Elder Saturday. The two rivals met in Hays, and the Thunderbirds got a 77-56 win over the Bears.

Friday night, the T-Birds stepped out of the district to face Roy-Winifred. The two Northern C division opponents played a tight game, but in the end, Roy-Winifred escaped with a 64-61 win. Chance Main scored 32 points in the loss for HLP, which is 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the district.

In the ranks of Class B, Rocky Boy had another strong weekend, while Harlem suffered two narrow defeats. The Stars beat Havre on the road Thursday night and backed it up by knocking off Cut Bank 80-64 in Rocky Boy Friday. The Stars are 8-1 overall.

Harlem played host to Shelby and Poplar on back-to-back nights Friday and Saturday and lost a pair of close games. Friday, the Wildcats tried to rally for a win against the Coyotes, but ended up losing 68-61. T.J. Reynolds scored 31 for Shelby, while Brad Cichosz led the Wildcats with 19. Ryle Foote and Lane Allen both had 12.
