Team brings home one divisional champion

Press release

The Havre High School speech and debate team brought a divisional champion home from the Central-East Divisional Tournament in Sidney Friday and Saturday, one of 14 Blue Ponies who qualified for state.

Havre was up against all of the other nine Class A speech, debate and drama teams from the Central and East divisions, with the top 12 finishers in each event qualifying for the state tournament this Friday and Saturday in Corvallis.

First-year impromptu speaker Jordan Jarman brought home a first-place medal from divisionals as the divisional champion in her event, while Mackenzie Parrotte, another first-year competitor, qualified for state with a ninth-place finish in impromptu.

First-year policy debaters Hailey Azure and LillieAnn Mecklenburg qualified for state and brought home second-place medals in their event.

First-year speaker Alex Barkus also qualified for state, bringing home a fourth-place medal in informative speaking.

Kaleb Gardner, a third-year competitor for the Blue Ponies, broke into quarterfinals in Lincoln-Douglas debate and ended up with a fifth-place medal.

Barret Kilgore and Mallory Schaub, first-year competitors in dramatic oral interpretation of literature, both qualified for state with Kilgore bringing home a sixth-place medal and Schaub finishing in 12th.

Kylee Thomas, a first-year competitor in original oratory, took ninth in her event.

Two Havre public forum debate teams, both with first-year competitors, also qualified for state with Eric Harrison and Xavier Ulano finishing in 10th and Tony Antley and Sidney Scheresky-O'Neil earning a slot with a 12th-place finish.

"This is a great finish to a great season," said head coach Tim Leeds. "Almost all of these kids are in their first year of competition, and competed against some of the best in Montana to earn their way to state.

"They have learned a lot in this year of competition, and keep getting better every week," Leeds added. "I am looking forward to how they finish up in Corvallis."
