Central A rivals turn back Pony boys

The Havre High boys basketball team was hoping to climb back into the Central A conference race with a win or two this past weekend. Unfortunately for the Blue Ponies, that's not exactly what happened.

The Ponies traveled to Livingston Friday to open their two-game road trip, but proved to be no match for the Rangers, who routed Havre 56-25. Saturday, Belgrade, like Livingston, completed the season sweep of the Ponies, knocking them off by the score of 67-50.

Against Livingston Friday, the Ponies got off to a dreadful start offensively, scoring just three points in the first quarter as they fell behind 13-3 at the end of the opening stanza. In the second quarter, the onslaught by the Rangers continued. Livingston poured in 17 points in the quarter, while Havre managed just seven. At the half, HHS trailed 30-10.

The Ponies tightened up some in the third quarter and held the Rangers to just eight points. Havre managed to score 11 points and cut the lead to 17 heading into the fourth. Yet, in the last eight minutes, the Ponies scored just four points. Livingston, on the other hand, scored 18 and that led to the lopsided final score.

Jakim Ricketts led the way for the Rangers with 18 points. Rydell Floyd also had a stellar night with 15. Tanner Parsons was the high scorer for the Ponies with six points. Austin Delarosa and Trey Murphy also pitched in with five each.

"To be honest, Friday night was kind of ugly," HHS head coach Curt Leeds said. "We only shot 13 percent from 3-point range. So we didn't shoot the ball well at all. But our kids really came back and they had a really good first quarter the next night against Belgrade,"

After a slow start on offense Friday, the Ponies came out firing Saturday against Belgrade, scoring 17 points in the first quarter, just eight points fewer than in the entire game against Livingston. With the hot start, Havre led 17-16 after one quarter of play, but the Panthers went on a 17-5 run in the second quarter and at the intermission, the Ponies trailed 33-22.

In the second half, Havre simply couldn't keep pace with Belgrade. The Panthers outscored the Ponies by nine points in the third quarter and pushed the lead to 20. Tanner Parsons, who scored 13 points in the game, helped Havre scored 18 in the final stanza, but HHS still lost by 17. Dawson Fowler tied Parsons with a game-high 13 points in the win for Belgrade. Jacob Irvin added 12 points for Havre in the loss. Delarosa contributed with eight.

"I thought we really played a lot better against Belgrade," Leeds said. "To go down there and get 50 points after we only got 25 the night before was good. We ran a motion offense and got some good shots. I think that overall, we did get better, although we haven't been playing defense as well as we did at the start of the season."

The Ponies (2-10, 0-5) are guaranteed to finish fourth in the Central A standings. They will play back-to-back home games against CMR and Malta this Friday and Saturday.
